I didn't talk to my dad much the first 13 yrs of my life. Then BAM he shows up. Now I'm 33 and I talk to him 2-3 times a week for an hour or 2 just shooting the breeze. My mom was there for majority of my childhood and now I talk to her once a month or so and holidays. We never see eye to eye on everything but we support one another and keep I touch.

Honestly it's your choice what kind of person you want to be. Do you want your kids to not know you? How hard is it to call someone? I hadn't talked to my grandparents in 20yrs. Then my grandfather died. What a fucking mistake that was, I lost out on one of the coolest people I never knew.
