    25 man fps woes

Goals: Run the game on high or ultra settings with a stable 30-60 fps in 25 man raids all fights.

Current situation: So I bought a computer to run 25 man raids. That was pretty much it. Now the fps is dropping really low. I don't know what the problem is but I want to be able to run 30+ fps on high settings in 25 man raids. I thought this pc could do that. I'm pretty frustrated with the whole thing and I'd rather just throw money at this problem instead of more time.

The machine will run everything fine on ultra settings until I step foot in 25 man raiding. Then there is a severe crash. Even putting the settings on low I only get a stable 30 fps but it ranges from 18-40 on the Tortilla fight with all the aoe on screen.

Crashes: There has also been some crashing that occurs in 25 man raids. The prompt usually tells me first wow has stopped responding and then your driver has stopped working but recovered.

Overclocking: Not sure if I've done this. I've only changed the settings in Catalyst control center. Basically, turned the gpu, cpu, fan control and min/max power up to max. Set texture filtering quality to performance as I don't really know what the other setting do and from google search they don't seem to improve much of performance.

Resolution: I lowered my screen resolution as well from 1920x1080 to 1600x900. I did notice an improvement in fps but nothing major. It looks significantly worse though.

I'm not the most tech savvy person so I'll probably need some help doing most things.

    A few questions:

    1. Do I need to upgrade something? Like I said I don't know much about pcs and what it takes to run this game. I thought this machine could handle it. The benchmark on the site I bought it from had wow at 60 fps on ultra. Where would I start with upgrades?

    2. Do I need to overclock? I don't know much about this. I've not done anything with cpu/gpu outside of catalyst control center.

Is there some guide to optimize AMD's card for wow? I saw one available for nvidia but not for wow.

Would be willing to chat with someone about what I can do if available.

Thanks for reading this far. I appreciate the help.

WoW relies more on the speed of the CPU than anything else when it comes 25 man, it cant utilize multiple cores and there is only so much the graphics card can do before having a more powerful card does nothing.

the only real way to gain FPS in a 25 man is to increase the clock of your CPU, 3.6 will probably give you 20-30 fps in a 25 man raid with lots of activity. my cpu is clocked to 4.4 and im at 40-50 in a busy raid. hopefully that gives you some perspective on what to expect if you do OC

in terms of your crashes, have you tried using the WoW repair? maybe go as far as reinstalling the game?

Your issue is that cpu is meh for WoW. i5-4670k and overclock or overclock the balls out of that. Throwing money at things won't fix your issue if you don't understand why though. WoW front loads on cores 0-1 as soon as they tap out you have pretty well hit your performance limits for your chip at its current clocks, AMD have weaker cores so tap out first, intel have stronger cores and thus perform better in MMO's. However you will never get a consistant 60 fps @ full ultra in wow without phase change cooling.
    Personal rig:
    • i5-3570k (4.2ghz) || CM hyper 212 evo || Asrock extreme 4 || Corsair (2 x 4gb 1600mhz) ram
    • Samsung 840 (120gb) || WD blue 1tb || WD green 1tb
    • Powercolor 7870xt || Silverstone strider 500w ||NZXT source 210

You need to get rid of that CPU.

Meh, with an AMD CPU the only real way to gain FPS in wow is to bin it.

I wish I knew that before I bought it.

How much would it cost to replace with an intel?

Edit: from what I've been reading it looks like I would need to replace the motherboard as well to go from AMD to intel.

Not looking forward to doing any of that as I'm sure there will complications.

    You can reuse your RAM.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($117.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($49.99 @ Mwave)
    Total: $167.97
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
    (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-27 22:48 EDT-0400)

Just keep in mind you can only use 2 sticks of ram. Hope you don't have 4x2GB ram but rather 2x4GB.

i3 won't cut the mustard in 25man raiding I'm afraid.

Reading your previous build choice i can simply say.

You dont have the resources (certain PC or money) to maintain 60 FPS during 25man raids on Ultra, i doubt high also mostly because a PC that can do that...Well its not something cheap or even manageable since WoW isnt that well programmed..Generally what i mean is, you cant afford it, adapt to what you have as i explain below.

What you can do, is fix your settings at something that your PC can manage and stay there.

Turn your resolution back to 1080p and try this settings.

    Important parts are:

    Multisampling x1

    Shadows Low

Liquid: Fair/Good whatever you wanna look at.

    Sunshafts: Disabled

    SSAO : Disabled

Particle Density: High (Most important for raiding along with Projected Textures)

    Projected Textures: Enabled

    Texture Resolution: High

Texture Filtering: 8x Anisotropic, do 16, check if you lose FPS, doubt you do, so put it 16 if you dont, if you do, keep it at 8.

    View Distance: Fair/Good

    Env Detail: Fair/Good

    Ground Cluttter: Fair

I just noticed you messed with the Catalyst Control center.

To make sure you didnt do anything weird, reset everything and make sure its "Application Controlled".

Well, heh, those settings make my PC struggle in 25mans, and my specs are much better. :-P

SSAO was a big one for me when I had a lower end system. I got about 30% more fps turning it off.

i5-3570k with a Z77 Motherboard and a GTX 650 Ti BOOST will be a nice upgrade.

GTX 760 if you wanna spend more.

GTX 770 if you are willing to drop $400 for a card

GTX 780 if you want to just overkill it.....I have a 780 and love it

Go i5 3570K if you are expecting to overclock it.
Go i3 3250 otherwise. An i5 won't give you more over an i3 except for turbo; quad cores benefits over a dual core with hyper-threading are not present in wow.

An i3 performs like 5-10% slower than an i5 in WoW.

    GTX 780 is now $499

in 25 man raids if you lower your details untill cpu bound, and if the i3 4130 - 3.4ghz gives you 40fps then the 4670k overclocked to 4.4ghz ( 3.4ghz to 4.4ghz about 30% more clockspeed ) might give you around 50-52fps in 25 man raids, and if you want to maintain those fps on ultra, you will need a faster graphics card probably.

I started reading and I quickly told myself "I bet this guy as an ATI graphic card"...

  18. #18
next time you run a 25 man raid, try lowest detail settings, 800x600 or windowed mode reduce the window size until you hit your maximum fps. maybe 20-22fps at 3.6ghz if you oc to 4.6ghz you'll probably get 26fps with your fx4100.

My Haswell Pentium would beg to differ. It's not pretty by any stretch (in part because I have a three-year-old GPU), but it's playable. Now if you were talking 25 Heroic, I'd be more inclined to agree, but the i3-4340 has the highest non-K clock of the lot, which is relevant for WoW.

There's a lot of AMD in your PC. Replace with Intel/Nvidia - problem solved.

All right, gentleperchildren, let's review. The year is 2024 - that's two-zero-two-four, as in the 21st Century's perfect vision - and I am sorry to say the world has become a pussy-whipped, Brady Bunch version of itself, run by a bunch of still-masked clots ridden infertile senile sissies who want the Last Ukrainian to die so they can get on with the War on China, with some middle-eastern genocide on the side
