Watch Die Hard backwards. It's about a bunch of terrorists who build a building in time for a christmas party. Horror movies are awesome this way too! Former Hockey Goalie heals people by pulling weapons out of them so they can have sex!

Ghostbusters is an obvious classic without just going with a horror movie.
One that hasn't been mentioned and which people tend to not have seen, though, is The Frighteners. It's a very Ghostbusters-esque movie, in that it's horror-type content but played for laughs. I highly recommend it to anyone who didn't catch it the first time around.

For a Halloween themed movie, probably Trick ‘r Treat (2007). I believe it to be the only good Halloween eek movie this century.
