I'm super casual-core, and I call WOW Vanilla, CLASSIC.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING SIR!? This is a forum! Leave the "text talk" elsewhere!
GOOD DAY!
It's called vanilla because it was the original.

I feel this naming convention perpetuates the appalling fallacy that vanilla ice cream should be bland. This, as well as the blandness of ignorant manufacturer's vanilla ice cream, should be put a stop to immediately.
I don't think this matters nearly as much as you think it does.
Vanilla is plain, devoid of added flavors or toppings.
Original WoW was plain, with no added expansions on it.
FFXIV - Maduin (Dynamis DC)
Vanilla = original = plain.
Plain WoW = WoW without expansions.
It'd be better if everyone referred to it as Classic WoW or WoW Classic, but it is what it is.

The first ice cream was a Sorbet made from local fruits and glacier ice. The romans got their ice from the Apennine Mountain glaciers. They crushed it and added fruits like strawberrys, honey and even Rose water. Vanilla is a pretty new taste compared to that. Outside USA the term "vanilla" for original is pretty unknown. "Classic" or "original" is a better term.
Atoms are liars, they make up everything!
Most of the morons who posted and say vanilla WoW sucked never even played it during that time..
I've just assumed vanilla is basic flavor. First WoW was basic WoW, therefor vanilla.
In BC/WOTLK I called it "pre-BC" but I was in the minority halfway through WOTLK.

Yeah, I agree, my guess would be the fact that vanilla is considered a basic flavour.
I absolutely hate the term vanilla wow and I refuse to use it. I always use classic wow.
Stating an opinion as fact does not make it fact. Opinions are not fact. So don't be stupid and make a fool of yourself by trying to pass off your opinion as fact.
From my experience, the term "Vanilla" really didn't catch on until mid-late WotLK, the term really "took over" in Cataclysm. In Burning Crusade, people called it PreBC, then Classic WoW caught on later.
Just my experiences with the term though, I'm sure others have their different experiences, but the other posters are right about the term Vanilla. I don't really like the term myself, I usually just stick to Classic or PreBC
