Laptop freezing issue under Windows 8 + 8.1 and BSOD's

    Hello MMO Champion computer specialists

I own a Acer Aspire 5755G laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium (which I immediately upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate). I had absolutely no issues running Windows 7 on my laptop, apart from a hard drive failure one time (which Acer Support kindly fixed for me at their cost, of course).

However, ever since I upgraded to Windows 8, and now Windows 8.1, I've been having random freezing issues. The laptop will freeze and all hard drive activity stops (the blue LED indicating hard drive activity does not show anything at all). Pressing any keys on the keyboard or touching the touchpad does nothing, the only way I've found to solve the issue is to hold the power button down to turn the laptop off, and then turn it back on again.

Also, the last few days I've had 3 Blue Screens of Death after logging into Windows with the error message "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". I'm not sure if one is related to the other, I just felt it was worth mentioning.

My first reaction to the freezing issue was that it could be a driver issue, but I have installed all the drivers from acer.be for Windows 8 + I've installed the Intel HD Graphics 3000 Windows 8 drivers directly off the Microsoft site, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M drivers directly off the NVIDIA website (so they are the latest drivers).

I'm at a complete loss as to how to figure out what the issue could be, because my laptop ran flawlessly under Windows 7.

Hopefully you guys can help me pinpoint the problem, just tell me what information you need (like a dxdiag paste for example) and I'll get it done for you.

your problem right there is win8. drivers are still rolling out for win8, so unless its a brand new laptop with its own win8 drivers, dont bother upgrading for at least another year.

win8 is not worth the headache, its an operating system made for touch screens and people that must be connected to 24/7 to social media. it has broken many things including openvpn and several other useful programs that work just fine even under winXP.

    solution: revert to win7

Urgh that's disappointing to hear, I was hoping I could fix the issue instead of having to go back to Windows 7, but if it's the only way, then it's the only way. I'll wait to hear from some other people but thank you for replying so quickly, I guess I'll get a Windows 7 bootable USB Flash drive ready.

    well, thats just my opinion.

i guess you can search for the particular errors that you are getting and see if there are solutions to them already (wouldnt expect much from that tbh) ... you could also go to your manufacturer's page and see if they have updates for win 8 /8.1

when everything else fails. ask around somewhere else

Most drivers are directly compatible with win8, and it's rare for any relevant hardware to not have win8 drivers.

What headache? Do you not realise that the whole metro UI is optional, and you can just use desktop? In win8.1 it doesn't even require additional programs.

    Complete bollocks.

That's just up to OpenVPN, Microsoft can't really cater to every single application's needs with an update.

Might work for him but that's just plain lazy. He'll also miss out on the performance improvements windows 8 brings to the table.

Right now I'm getting a BSOD practically every time I log in to windows... I have to cross my fingers and hope I don't get one, today it took 7 attempts to login before I didn't actually get a BSOD. I think the easiest option would probably be to revert back to Win 7. I indeed am going to miss the performance improvements win 8 (or 8.1) gives, but right now it just doesn't seem to like my laptop at all. It probably is the lazy option, but seeing as I had no issues running Win 7 at all, I think it's probably the best one too.

I've had Win 8 before it was available for retail, my problems have been minimal.

Op, you probably have a bad driver somewhere, go to site of you laptop manufacturer and download their drivers. Win 8.1 make some small tweaks coming from Win 8 that may require you to update some drivers. Your Nvidia driver should be fine, I know I had to update almost everything Intel though.

Disable all if your start up programs and try that.

Microsoft just released a update for windows 8 and 8.1 which makes a lot of improvements. If you have not done your Windows Update recently, make sure you do and it might just fix your issues. One optional update is one for the Intel controller chipset. I would download that too if you have it as a optional selection.
