Yeah I'm not sure if the servers are screwed up or what, I got blizz'd earlier yesterday on my monk (not lagging at all, running around and killing stuff with like 30 ping) - game was totally normal and then suddenly "your connection has timed out" and when I log back in my monk is dead and says she was slain by a rare when there wasn't even a rare on my screen when I "dced."

Later I got t/o'd like 6 times in 5 minutes just browsing the auction house, this hasn't ever happened to me in the past 1.5 years of playing D3 and I know my internet connection is stable so...

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to save yourself from DC deaths, the way d3 has been handled. Getting DCed in front of elites will be death no matter how much EHP you have when your character is derping around in a pool of desecration and arcane enchants for 30 seconds. If you keep playing I think you'll find that you will eventually stop dying to anything but lag altogether.
