No of course not. Hell, in Dragon Soul me and my friend tanked it without either of us knowing any of the mechanics the first time we went in. We were on Vent and just went in and didn't bother looking anything up even though we were tanks. It's not important, you can't really mess up LFR fights.

Research an LFR fight? Hah, I haven't set foot into that crappy mode on any character since 5.4

    Heroics on the other hand.....

  4. #44
Isn't this what LFR is for?

But really I just skim through the dungeon journal before each boss and get the jist of what will kill me.

Personally, I'd say this for LFR, maaaaaybe for Flex, as they are somewhat close in tactics from what I have experienced, I'm just the type of person that learns by seeing the fight, rather than reading "do this, this and this" ect weather by doing the fight itself, or watching a video, or a combination of both

    Gonna be honest, I don't.

    But you should :P

It'd be great if Icyveins published like a 3-point summary of the LFR version of the fight for everyone's quick perusal. Like the "in brief" section they have but even shorter and not buried in the full comprehensive strat guide.

I don't, but I do want to explain some things.
A] If the tanks, healers, and most of the dps are stacking, you should probably be stacking with them. i.e. The puddles on the 1st boss of ToT - Most of the group (hopefully not the tanks) is standing in it, you should be too. Or the spots on the boss prior to Spoils in SoO.
B] Unless A applies, if you see a funny colour on the ground, GET OUT OF IT.
C] If it's a dragon or dragon-like creature, it likely has a tail swipe and a cone breath. Stand at its sides.
D] If there are adds, you should probably be killing them. Even if your order is weird, at least you're helping us get them down. This applies to MCd players as well.
E] If there is more than one boss, the health pools comparatively are likely significant; They either 1] share a health pool so it doesn't matter who you're on, 2] have to die at the same time, or 3] heal to full when their buddy dies. There are only three options, a quick "Is there a kill order?" gets the job done. (The "exception" is Troll Council, however you have to have enough alive to keep the buff from causing a wipe or the dps to kill the boss before that can happen, in which case the usually end up dying at the same timeish by default, save for Sul. Still, not rocket sciene - Focus fire the one that you hit harder than the others.)
F] If you are linked to other players, you either need to group up or get away from each other.
G] DUNGEON. JOURNAL. It isn't perfect, but it'll give you enough info that you can figure out the rest when it happens without being a detriment to your group.

When you've been raiding for four expansions, there's not a lot of surprises in mechanics.

Before LFR was implemented I would research every boss fight in a raid before stepping foot through the portal.

For LFR, I tend to just skim the Dungeon Journal nowadays as I do not raid as often.

  9. #49
nope i use lfr to learn the basics of the encounter and than figure it all out from there, but i also have trouble just reading a fight and understanding all of it, i do better learning it firsthand.

I did when the first few wings of mop lfr were opened.
For ToT and SoO, I just jumped in and hoped for the best.

I research what look drops but that's about it. LFR, especially if you are dps is like a fps. Run around and shoot anything that isn't an ally.

  14. #54
Nope. The mechanics are usually somewhat ignorable, and as a healer, there's not much I have to worry about other than a) peoples' health bars and b) where I'm standing.

I kinda wish everyone would. Yeah, we know LFR is a joke. But if 23/25 members don't know, you can expect a wipe at some point. But this really only applies to when a wing has been out for some time.

Early on, I could definitely see why people would want to learn it themselves.
God, no! ANYTHING BUT A WIPE!

This, so much this. In Raids and dungeons. I have a brain and 9 years of experience with this game. Most deaths I suffer would not be fixed by pre-knowledge of mechanics, and it annoys the hell out of me that people want to inhibit my fun by 'forcing' me to read about mechanics so we can avoid one wipe (repair bills are so high, amirite? And gold is so hard to get, amirite?). New content is only really 'new' once, settle the fuck down and let me enjoy it.

It's a game, I tend to play for fun and will learn by doing, I'm not going to ruin the exitement of seeing a new boss by looking everything up b4hand, I'm also not watching a movie on youtube b4 I watch it in the cinema. Games are meant to be played, you need to explore etc.. I wonder if people who look everyting up regarding to wow also do the same for every game they play (single or multiplayer)?

If somehow I'm tanking I will however make sure to at least now the basic strat for the tankpart of the fight.

    This.
Since I stopped raiding (around the middle of WotLK), I eventually slowed down on theorycrafting and strategy researching (my guilds have never been really interested in reading strategies anyway)... but that doesn't mean you can't use your observation skills and knowledge of "how things usually work" during a WoW encounter.
Even though fights are much more sophisticated nowadays, the core idea is still the same, with the same basic blocks.

I'm actually in shock that the vote for yes was so close to no D:

I read dungeon journal if I have never done the fight before, but I won't go online and look for a guide or anything.

My God, what a horrible creation. People seeing what they want? Thank God they tried to shy away from that. I know it pisses me off when I'm in an heroic raid, yet in the back of my head all I can think is 'some casual player is playing a heroic dungeon and not wiping.' -Vodkarn
