What modern driving games are worth playing? (PC)

    Hey guys,

What driving games are people playing atm?
Looking for something like Iracing/sim racing but I want to be able to just go for a drive also so it doesn't need to be racing so much if that makes sense?

There used to be a game called m25 racer or London racer I cant remember and it let you bomb about all round the m25 and London but its ancient is there anything even remotely close to this?

I guess if I could have my cake and eat it I would like something that I can just drive around and mess around with for a couple of hours every now and then when im not feeling competitive enough to want to race lol.

    I actually found it lol

Haven't played racing sims for several weeks, so I am not fully up to date, but rFactor II and Project Cars look very promising for being in alpha/beta. Both have issues currently, pCars with the driving model and wheel support, but are already fun.

I've had my eyes on Project CARS for a while, looks promising. Not out yet, of course.

The only reason I bought an x-box 360 was for the Forza series. Its simply the best racing series there is. I really haven't found any racing game that gives me what I need on the PC unfortunately. If I end up buying an xb-one it'll be because of the Forza series.

there are no good racing games out there for me atm. but i neither like gangsta bitching (need for speed...) nor realism (pretty much everything else).

the best racing games for me were probably:

-pod (racing over a dying alien planet in rusty cars to get on the last escape ship. awesome)
-nitronic rush (small gem made by students. but very well done)
-racers with weapons or just much destruction (have a nice day, flatout)
-extremely fast racers (star wars pod racers, games like wipeout, or one other old game where you race in flying cars through cities)
    -trackmania

atm the only racing game even remotely interesting could be probably distance (from the creators of nitronic rush). all others look just the same to me in the last 10 years ...

If you are looking for sim racing with beautiful cars, there is always Gran Turismo. The latest version for the PS3 has gotten pretty good reviews.

Some might bitch about the lack of crash damage ... But seriously, it's a "car porn" game, why would you want to see the cars beaten up? That like watching a bikini girls video and wanting to see the girls battered and bruised.

Lack of damage was never that big a deal for me, but what made the Forza series so much better was the physical body modifications. If you're going to modify a production car, you're going to put external aero mods on it. Also forza has a pretty good painting tool that lets you get really creative. The ability to tinker around and make your own creation is much better in the Forza series than the GT series.

I did toy with the idea of buying a ps3 just for gran turismo but would rather find something on the PC.

Anything almost open world driving? As in I just want to drive around doing nothing but driving.. I guess I want a real world driving sim if such a thing exists lol

Test Drive Unlimited series is probably the closest thing PC have at the moment.

Any game on the Yogscast's Trucking Tuesdays playlist.

Jokes aside though, any of them really, they're all the same at this point anyway.

Thing is the "sim" part of Forza is terrible.

Autopilot assists that you cant turn 100% off and even the devs admit they have been making it less hardcore and more "mainstream/arcade" for the last couple of releases. Good if you like ricing and sticking go faster stripes on the car, not so good at simulating proper physics.

The latest Forza is pretty much a freemium game too (that they charge £50 for) where you have to buy 2/3 of the content back that was in the previous game, including the Nurburgring lol.

Newest racing game on pc is Assetto Corsa if you like sims.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with the autopilot sims. I turned them all off. I turned off everything except ABS, because real cars have that. Manual shifting, everything.

I kind of wish though, that ABS and positive traction control were mechanical addons you could put in cars for a cost of performance index points. Both those are real life features a lot of cars have!

The previous Forza games were the same with the addon cars costing money. Usually I'm pretty against such things, but in the case of the Forza series, the game comes with more cars than most games ever have. The fact they continue to churn out cars for a long time is ok with me. They started with over 500 cars in Forza 4, wich is more than any PC game has ever had. If you bought all the car packs, you ended up with over 700 which is pretty insane. Unlike the GT series, half aren't skylines either. ; )

Yes but its 500 cars and 26 tracks in Forza 4.. Its 200 cars and 14 tracks in Forza 5 and a load of micro DLC to get them back, a bit below the belt that they removed the Ring as its probably the most used track too. Pretty much shows what MS future plans are selling under 1/2 a game for even more cash than the last one. Tho after the botched corporate greed based reveal of the X1 it comes as no surprise.

Theres also steering aids that cant be turned off and restricts steering and ability to get from lock to lock fast enough to catch slides and such. Theres even vids online of the steering not even moving in time with steering wheels being used which is a bit crap if you bought the £300 wheel expecting it to work properly.

I have played GT-R 2, amazing game and it feels/seems very realistic (obviously you can't be sure since i ve never driven those beast cars...). i can't comment on next gen gtR games since i haven't played any further, wow sucked my life soon after gtr2, so go ahead and try them out. Even with a keyboard you can be good/decent but these type of games really REALLY need a good wheel to get the good feel that you need for precise steering, steady throttling and breaking.

Yeah I haven't played Forza 5 yet. I heard they had a lot less cars. 200 still is way more than most games. I haven't bought a new system because I wasn't so hyped for Forza 5. I wouldn't say its half a game though, the main game is the mechanics. Less cars sucks sure, but I can't judge overall without taking everything in to account. I haven't really looked in to it though, as I said, I wasn't super hyped for forza 5. They do add open wheel cars for the first time though, which is kind of neat.

And who knows, if Gran Turismo ends up being better this time around, I might get that instead. I had a PS2 before the 360, might be a PS4 next time around. The thing is, while Gran Turismo is a fun driving game, it doesn't have the same level of creativity as modifying cars in Forza. The custom paint job is _Huge_. I spent hours in Forza fine tuning a C class Miata and then making a real world representation of the Mazda livery. Or a rally tuned Focus. (Though the GT series did have dirt races that are so much fun) Those are things you just can't do with GT. So it might be fun going through the races, but it doesn't have that hobby level that Forza has.

If I do end up buying a next gen system, I'll probably see in a few months what cars are released as DLC. You can get the season pass for $50. If its a ton of extra cars, I might go with it. Otherwise I'll probably pass.

    Assetto Corsa

So far this one may become my new all time favorite racing game, and it's not even completely released. For once I can adjust the FOV, thank god. I can't stand racing games with a FOV that makes me feel like I'm driving with binoculars. I can also tweak everything about the UI, disabling things I find distractingly pointless without having to disable it entirely. And the physics are really nice. The race tracks will have little lumps in the roads that can affect direction and steering as opposed to most games having impossibly smooth surfaces.
I just wished I had some money for a good force feedback steering wheel (mine broke a few months back ) because it's near impossible to play with a game pad alone. I'm excited to see the final product once it's fully completed.

looks like someone may be working on it actually
