Alan Turing gets a Royal Pardon

So Alan Turing the guy who helped break the enigma code during WW2 and is said to the father of computers has received a Royal Pardon from the Queen.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25495315

His crime was he was a homosexual at a time when it was illegal in England and he was sentenced to chemical castration which lead to his supposed suicide

Even though im not gay i believe this is long overdue and Alan Turing should lauded as one of Englands greatest minds and celebrated as such.

Cool, glad he got pardoned because that's a dumb fucking "crime". However, I see this thread turning into "why isn't everyone who was in the same situation given a royal pardon as this just perpetuates preferential treatment which is just as bad" nitpicking bullshit and missing the point. Should be fun to watch unfold.

Good, the man was a genius that not only helped end the war early but his work lead to the development of the very things we are all sitting at right now. It is just a shame that the Woman pardoning him was not the same person that condemned him, those people are long dead.

The problem with a pardon is that it is an excuse. You say (or at least you should say) "pardon me" after burping. It is an acknowledgement that you did something wrong, but it's okay now. Rather than issuing a pardon a simple statement recognising that the law was wrong should suffice.

    About fucking time.

As a LGBT person and an avid computer enthusiast (and soon to be professional), this couldn't have fucking come soon enough.

Turing being executed was...God I can't even put that into words.

Thus is the inherent danger in letting one group of thinking dictate the public morality.

It was not the Royals that sentenced him.

Was the Royals that ultimately pardoned him.

The Royal Family cannot go around pardoning people willy nilly. That'd be a major interference with the criminal justice system. The House of Lords rejected a pardon for Turing last year, and the only reason this won't cause a political issue is because of how popular it is.

Who said I don't blame them too?
