I often think similar things, then realise they must know each other well enough to recognize each other even from a distance.

For example I can't see long distance very well and need glasses, so while I can see peoples faces up close, more than about as little as 10+ yards I start to struggle to define faces, so the amount of people that have tried to get my attention from across school yards or opposite side of the street I have always had difficulty. But then I realised that after spending a lot of time with my friends I could figure out who they were from the clothes they wore to the way they walk, so one can only assume that it is similar when talking about fully covered muslim women.

And just throwing this out here on slightly unrelated topic; while I am fine with people having religious beliefs and customs, burkas freak me out -because- I can't see their faces. After so long struggling with faces it just makes me uncomfortable when I am not able to define a face now. So that's just me putting that out there, nothing against the gals xD

They have some sort of IFF system installed in their masks. With a tactical heads up display that can project identifying data directly on to their retinas!

I am amazed by this question, and the obvious awe surrounding it ,

    Imagine this...

It is 2100hrs and suddenly there is a power outage in your neighborhood. It is completely dark in the house/apartment, you can not see anything.

Would you have difficulty recognizing your family, friends, roommate, etc?

If it was really dark, there might be groping to confirm identity.

They were asking what I would do, I do not have a well enough developed olfactory system to identify people based on odor. I can, however, usually tell from groping.

but if they grope each other they might be considered lesbians and you know what happens to homosexuals in certain regions

OP, I think you found the answer yourself, it's their handbags! Seems to me that when groups of people dress similarly, it's the details that set them apart. If you spend so much time with your friends while they're dressed as such, I'm sure you can find a way.

You are trying to rationalise people who treat women as second class citizens.

Think of it this way, if your friend wears a mask, wont you recognize him ?

That said, there are subtle hints like body shape, and there are variations in style of clothing like jewelry and purses. It wasn't very difficult for me as a child to distinguish between my mother from other women.

I guess i would ask the question too if i wasn't from the region.

Not nation bashing at all. Merely pointing out facts.

I treat everyone as equal. (Even the English)

Yet these people would kill me on site & they treat their mothers, sisters & daughters like scum.

Tactile information is important, although I would be cautious when groping children or visitors in the house when their is a power outage.

I recommend auditory methods of identification.

From movies and classes and stuff, I've come to understand that that is mostly outdoor garb. Women are allowed to see one another without them indoors, family as well. If you all walk out together you're very likely to keep track of each other without a lot of issues. Regardless, how do you know your father's in the room and speaking to you without actually seeing him? You know his pressence, his scent his voice and even what him walking down the hall sounds like. No one tries to do this, you just do.

Most women take off their burkas when at home with their immediate family members.

How do they know who is under which burka? How do they recognize each other and how do husbands recognize their own wife(s)? Other than the handbags, they all looked absolutely identical.

To a degree, burkas offer anonymity as you could just go out and nobody would be able to identify you by your looks, which is somewhat cool.

Any help in answering this question is greatly appreciated.
    Their:
    a. walk, yes if you live with a person long enough you would know the way they walk.
    b. accessories.
    c. eyes.
    d. voice.
    e. Not all Muslim women wear burkas, there are variety of clothing that they wear (some don't wear anything extra from non-Muslim women).

False. The only place that this might be marginally true are the gulf countries mainly Saudi Arabia. Even there, most women nowadays go in groups without male escort and shop around.
