I recall an interview with Chris Metzen, where he mentioned they had at least another ~4 expansions in the pipeline and planned. Obviously as expansions go on, they may decide those are the final four, or to keep adding to it.

Who knows, but the belief that Warlords of Draenor is the last expansion is insane. The same was said for Mists of Pandaria, Catalcysm & Wrath of the Lich King. Give it up already guys.

So you basically think he worked on Expansion VI too? Blizzard begin working on the next one when the new one is released. For example, when MoP was released, Rob Pardo tweeted he was working on [WoD]-http://wow.joystiq.com/2012/10/28/awesome-the-next-expansion-will-be/. Take in the factor of development, concept and story planning would be discussed before that, and we can most likely guess that Expansion VI has had some degree of input from Mr. Street (if not that much). And didn't someone say it would be linked (somehow) with WoD? Maybe thematically?
Isn't it ironic how education is important, yet people forget all about it when they visit the internet?

I don't understand why people think WoD is the end, when Blizzard keeps saying they plan to keep this cash cow flowing as long as they can milk it.

The proof was made month ago when ghostcrawler himself said :

We are working on the next 3 expansions already, that was before wod was even announced.

Development starts early. They basically start brainstorming short after the release of the newest expansion.

The actual development happens around the second tier of the current expansion for the next expansion, when the 3rd tier is almost finalized (ideas/concept).

Warlords of Draenor and The Dark Below were being developed concurrently. WoD came together faster so it became the primary focus, but The Dark Below is still in development and will be the next expansion after WoD. More than likely WoW will be on a 1-1.5year release schedule for expansions for at least the next few years. The goal is to stymie the sub losses that occur between expansions by releasing them faster. If it works we'll continue to see expansions more often. If it doesn't work then they'll probably start to shift more focus onto their next flagship MMO after The Dark Below.

Actually for every single new player who want so 1->90 will be instantaneous. Thank to free 90 with WoD.
And IMO it's a good thing since leveling alone for someone trying the game for 90 level in nearly dead zones can be really boring. Sales number will have the last word, but I bet that WoD launch will probably be the best launch of all Xpack only because of this. I know at least 3 people that may buy WoD to try again and they left between WolK and mid Cata. They'll probably stop again because of no more into raiding and all this shit but just to enjoy some leveling with old friends. I can see a lot of appeal from this.

Op..you do realize that Blizz has stated themselves that WoD isnt that last one, that it is setting for the next couple of expansions? Of coarse WoD isnt the last one. Anyone who thinks this is out of the loop entirely.

    You are kidding right?

You actually want Proof of an expansion after WOD?

Okay, proof number one. In the Blizzcast Podcast that was came out when ICC was released in Wrath Metzen said, AND I QUOTE.."We currently working on the next SEVEN expansion for WOW." Download the podcast and hear it for yourself.

That means they were working on Cata, MOP, WOD, and FOUR more during Wrath.

Proof number two. During this year's Blizzcon Metzen said "We are working on the next WOW expansion, and the next, and the next, and the next....

But you probably think WOW ends at 100, right?
@Ghostcrawler:Some advice: [My pet issue] is why there were sub losses is one of the weaker arguments players use. Players don't have that data.

No way! And here I was thinking we'd see the credits roll after killing the last raid boss in WoD.

Well not that we need it, they're already working on the next two I believe. At least in concept stages. They said WoD leads directly into the next one.

I believe he said in the past that even Wrath was mostly done by the time he came on board. If you think about how far in advance they design things that'd be about right.

It's entirely possible that Blizzard will change their release model to something without expansions, changing the pacing of their content rather than amount of it. This is one counter example that could have Blizzard working multiple expansions into the future while still releasing no more expansions.

It isn't likely of course, as charging people for a huge patch every two years is part of the game.
