I'm not sure I see the problem. Societies that create culture tend to distribute that culture, especially through literature. The Greeks did it. The Egyptians did it. The Persians did it. The British and French did it.
What do you want, books so bland and formless that they could fit anyone anywhere. Hell we'd never have to worry about them influencing anyone because noone would read them!Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.
