Natural History of Azeroth

Hello. I'm interested in natural history and I was just wondering if there are any resources out there, a collective list, of all the flora and fauna of World of Warcraft or something similar. I've played since 2006 and what always brings me back is the world itself, but what I find strange is that for such a large and diverse world Blizzard haven't really, for authenticity's sake, given names to trees and other natural fantasy elements in the world. For example, how much do we know about the trees of Teldrassil apart from the fact they are beautiful? Tolkien had names for some of his trees and wood, etc, but I haven't ever come across anything like that for World of Warcraft. What about the natural history of the world? There should be resources for those who are interested that detail these things. Are there maps of the super-continent of Kalimdor before it sundered, for example? We do indeed have names for specific standout herbs and things for the herbalism profession, but what about the those bushes, trees, rocks, and other natural elements that litter the world with which we cannot interact? It really interests me to think about how the landscape of Northrend, say the Stormpeaks, were formed. I've always liked the idea of writing my own list for the natural history or making a website dedicated to the subject, but obviously it'd all be non-cannon.

Theres not too much out there really as most of it was formed by the Titans after the old gods where imprisoned.

I'm just a little surprised that even after all these years and with the game's extensive playerbase there isn't more detail for these things. It'd be nice to just see the team name some of the trees and rocks. Just think of how much they have to work with, from Redridge Mountains to Sholazar Basin to Valley of the Four Winds.

I'm interested in even the smallest details. Think about how extensive Azeroth is. Now look at the grasses and flowers of Shadowglen. What are there names that the Night Elves gave to them? What timber was used in the construction of the building there? What are the oldest rocks in Azeroth? I've also wondered why Blizzard haven't written something about the effects of the land after Deathwing destroyed it. It seems a long time ago that Cataclysm came out, and this world seems normal, but it wasn't always like this... Sure the changes are evident, but how has that impacted the flora and fauna aside from those things we can see in the game. It just feels like there should be more detail.

I highly recommend visiting the argent archives website and having a search for the sort of thing you're looking for. All the stuff on their is written by Roleplayers. There's lots of very detailed reports on flora and fauna, architecture and the sorts of stuff you're looking for. All written by players. It's partially player source information and a little fantastical but a lot of it is sourced and expanded from existing information provided by the game.

I personally wrote a short book on Warcraft plant life/botanics named "a beginners guide to Azerothian herbs". Although I never got it into the archives or officially published. Although my night elf has lots of fun selling it to passers by on there streets of stormwind!

And saruman, don't be afraid to write your own adaptions of what you believe to be the case regarding all those topics you've shown interest in. The role playing community appreciates all that sort of stuff. I'd recommend researching what the game can provide information-wise then write your own diaries of natural history of Azeroth and get it sent to the role playing archives of Argent dawn.

The servers of the site are notoriously slow. Have a google around and you should find enough to quench your thirst for knowledge for now!

Also as I added the previous post, don't be afraid to write your own diaries and accounts of what you think the answers to all of our our questions are. That's how historical documentation works. Role play, observe, write and archive! I get a huge amount of fun from it.

And, truth be told, I was aware of Herbalism, of course I was, but I didn't realise how expansive it actually is as I've strangely never taken it on in the long time I've played this game. A great number of Azeroth's natural elements are displayed here. But this only includes those things which are for the purpose of a profession. I think it takes a certain type of person to become excited about the prospect of even thinking about having special flora that develops in isolation in dungeons like the Slavepens or Underbog, or any other unique places. There are just so many possibilities in this massive world.

It really does surprise me that I've never taken up Herbalism in World of Warcraft. I've played since 2006 and it was always out of mind. It's probably due to the fact that I wasn't always interested in this subject. If it weren't for the fact that I said I'd stop playing for the gameplay aspects and finally quit (aside from logging on occasionally to fly around the zones) I would make a new character and start Herbalism.

I remember reading that Alexstraza is over 100,000 years old post being blessed by the titans. Although protodrakes can also live long lives seeing as how her first consort was a few thousand years older than her. This shows that Azeroth has rapid evolution. Indeed. It'd be good to have a time scale/timeline of Azeroth represented one day. It seems fairly obvious to assume that most people aren't going to be interested in the evolution of flora and fauna in Azeroth and Outland, but it is interesting to some. Imagine if we got to see some concept art of early animals or prehistoric Azeroth.
