Let them do what they want. Iran isn't foolish enough to do anything more than run it's mouth, and I'm pretty sure the Somalian pirates could probably overtake their ever-so powerful Navy if they wanted to. As others have said, Iran is doing this to show it's citizens that they have a big penis.

*gasp* an Iranian "destroyer"... actually it's a Frigate according to international listings.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaran_(frigate)
Globalsecurity.org states: 'Iran calls these ships "destroyers" but they would be classed as a light Frigate by the reckoning of all other countries.' [4] PressTV and Iranian military are themselves describing Jamaran as a "frigate class ship"[18] in the same article where they claim it as a "destroyer".
    Iranian Destroyers:
    Displacement: 1,500 tonnes
    Length: 95 meters (310 foot)
    Beam: 11.1 m estimated
    Draught: 3.25 m estimated
    1 × 76 mm DP rapid fire auto-cannon
1 × Fath 40 mm AA cannon; Bofors copy
    4 × SSMs C-802 / Noor[8]
2 × crew served 20 mm Oerlikon cannons
    2 × triple 324 mm light torpedoes
    4 × Fajr SAMs

    US Arleigh Burke Destroyers:
    Displacement: 10,800 short tons)
    Length: 509 ft (155 m) (Flight IIA)
    Beam: 66 ft (20 m)
    Draft: 30.5 ft (9.3 m)
96 cell Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS)
    1 × 5-inch (127-mm)/54 Mk-45 Mod 1/2 (lightweight gun) (DDG-51 through −80); or
    1 × 5-inch (127-mm)/62 Mk-45 mod 4 (lightweight gun) (DDG-81 onwards)
    2 × (DDG-51 through −84); or
    1 × (DDG-85 onwards) 20 mm Phalanx CIWS
    2 × 25 mm M242 Bushmaster cannons
    Torpedoes:
2 × Mark 32 triple torpedo tubes (six Mk-46 or Mk-50 torpedoes, Mk-54 in the near future)

Enjoy the view Iran. We'll send a ship with five times the length, seven times the displacement and 96 more verticle launch tubes than you have to come salute you. <3

Iran may also think we are weak now because we werent gung ho about attacking syria. They may think now is their time to shine on the world stage to impress russia and china by giving us the middle finger.

China and Russia are way smarter than to buy into that though. Pure domestic consumption if anything.

It's like when Putin started to send Russian strategic bombers to round trips to Venezuela again. Those strategic bombers are completely useless and were routinely escorted by F-22s based in Alaska. The Russians knew they were useless (which is why they likely weren't even armed with actual live weapons), but Putin did it to put on a show for his country.

The US military has to shrug to so much of this shit now, it's really getting old.

We have Russia's completely antique bombers.

We have China and their second hand aircraft carrier that can't even launch tactical aircraft that carry any amount of ordinance.

There was China's DF-21 "carrier killer" which was all hype from the get go. Remember Iran's "stealth fighter" from last year? This thing made from paper mache and house paint? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21307208

Then there is China's new hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile that has one quarter fifth to one quarter the range of American anti-ship weapons.

We have Russia's new F-22 knock off, that is really just a SU-35 with F-22 inspired shaping.

The list goes on and on. They really should just be permitted to start laughing at these showpieces.

So they sent some cardboard ships painted in navy gray to the U.S.? Cool story. What do the guns shoot? Marshmallows perhaps?

You know, any other country it would be a slam.

But this is the country that actually did that.

To be fair, it does have more offensive capabilities than the U.S. Navy's FFG-7 frigates.

a "Destroyer" with 1,500 ton displacement, that's some serious power projection

China and russia laugh at that comment.

Hell, even vietnam laughs at it.

I swear I saw this exact headline, something like a year or 2 ago.

Edit: It was 3 years ago, Iran was talking of sending a "flotilla" into the Atlantic.

They need to show their conservatives that they didn't surrender to the "pig" americans.

The US Navy has more missiles inside one of its ships than the entire Iranian Navy has ships.

They're doing it to show the hipocrysy of people. When US shops roam every day on the Iran maritime borders, nobody says a word, when they do the same the world explodes.
