I can't see what is particularly great about him.

An extremely wealthy man who had a head for business and spent a fortune indulging his hobbies - pretty much like Richard Branson does today.

Had it not been for his loopy behaviour in later life, he would be regarded as just another rich playboy from that era (who all seemed obssessed with aviation, presumably due to its infancy) and mostly forgotten.

He's buried like a hundred meters behind my apartment. There's a nice club (I usually hate clubs) next to the cemetary there, and whenever I've been there, no one ever seems to know why the club is named Hughes' Hangar, despite pictures of Hughes and airplanes and stuff being on the walls everywhere.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Too much work for a skeleton with long fingernails.
