What is the big deal here? Fantasy leagues have existed in sports for as long as I can remember. This is one for a pro-gaming league.

Last i checked thats how all fantasy leagues work. You draft a player and he plays a game. If your in NFL fantasy you draft a team of players and while they are playing the game you get points based on their stats. I dont see what the issue is.

As others have said, this is common. Many other games and sports have a meta game as such. Though it's kinda novel here in that the fantasy league is an extension of DOTA itself through the client. A previous feature of the first DOTA season iirc.
