Is it just me or does it seem to anyone else using nuclear weapons seem like political and national suicide.
Think about it for a moment, USA lobs one at Iran. The whole world gets pissed off, the USA citizens get pissed and oust the president for making them look bad opening up invasion from another country.
This just seems to me how it'd be

That's the point. They are a deterrent. It's more like 'Of so you've launched your nukes at us? We're gonna launch our nukes at you and then there will be no winners'. I'm not sure how many it is, but after enough successive nuclear blasts, you trigger a nuclear winter where the amount of debris that gets chucked up into the air inhibts the amount of sunlight getting to the ground and the amount of plants and food that can grow. And those things are expected to last years, if not decades. It happens naturally every so often when large volcanoes erupt.

And then you've got the resulting radioactive fallout, birth defects, higher amounts of cancer etc. It's not something anyone wants, but they're happy to use them to stave off aggression.

Nuclear Weapons are the most pointless thing ever created. Nobody can ever, ever use them without the entire world obliterating them. Even as a deterrent they are meaningless because even if attacked, to use one in retaliation would garner the same response as using them in aggression.
