It's always struck me as strange to fake a tragedy and then guilt trip anyone who doesn't fall for it as having a perceived lack of empathy.

Agreed. Seems like it would do nothing but contribute to the problem of people being wary of helping others.

There used to be a professional Romanian beggar on the London tube with a baby. She went up and down the trains all day long showing a pity note and collecting money and I could see her smirk when I looked at her. The baby was getting fatter by the week!
