WoW: Adventures (Like Bounties in Reaper of Souls)

    Hi all,

How would you feel if they added a variation of Reaper of Souls' Bounty-system to World of Warcraft?

In case you don't know, Bounties is a new way to play Diablo 3; the game presents you with tasks to do all around the world, such as killing a boss in a specific area, and once you've done that it'll reward you for it. You can do these Bounties over and over, and they are random, so you get to progress and find loot - but you don't get bored or grind the same place.

Here is how I imagine this for WoW:

    ADVENTURES OVERVIEW

    • Adventures would be a type of world quest that you complete for a reward.
    • The rewards come in the form of a Bag of Spoils, which contains some currency (like Valor and Gold), as well as a potential bonus item. This item can be anything; useful gear, a mount, a pet, etc. The item you may get will also be based on the activity you did, so you get something your character could actually benefit from.
    • The Adventures would send you on tasks around the entire world; not just the newest continent.
    • Different types of Adventures ask you to do different things, but examples could include to kill a specific boss, reach a reputation with a faction, attack an enemy city in PvP, and so on.

    HOW IT WORKS

    1. To begin an Adventure, you visit the Hero's Call Board in one of your faction's major cities.
    2. In the Hero's Call Board interface, you make a few choices in regards to what Adventures you want to display: PvE or PvP; group, raid or solo; which continents you want to Adventure on; and so on.
    3. Three Adventures are displayed based on your choices, randomly chosen from a pool of hundreds of Adventures - all designed by Blizzard.
    4. Once you choose one, the others fade out and you cannot select a new one until the current one is either finished or abandoned (abandoning an Adventure comes with a debuff preventing you to select a new one in a while, so you can't abuse the system until you get a particularly easy one).
    5. If you choose a group or raid Adventure (requires being in a group or raid to finish), you can share your Adventure with your comrades provided that they do not already have active Adventures of their own.
    6. Your chosen Adventure is displayed in your Quest Log, along with a descriptive test of what you need to do.
    7. Once an Adventure is finished, a reward screen pops up with your Bag of Spoils and potential experience points.
    8. You may then select a new Adventure at the Hero's Call Board. If you are in a group or raid, only one person has to visit the Hero's Call Board, and may then share the new Adventure with the rest via the Quest Log.

    EXAMPLE ADVENTURES

    • Defeat Lady Vashj before a timer expires.
    • Help defend a team of Mountaineers in Dun Morogh against a trogg attack.
    • Track down and kill a specific Rare mob.
    • Kill one of each breed of trolls, found across the world.
    • Kill an enemy faction leader.
    • Pick every type of herb found on Kalimdor.
    • Craft ten pieces of armour made from Thorium.
    • /Hug Garrosh Hellscream on Heroic Difficulty before defeating him.
    • Catch fifty Glacial Salmon out of Grizzly Hills rivers.

    WHY IS THIS AWESOME?

    • It gives you repeatable content, akin to daily quests - but it's a ton of more varied and fun.
    • It gives you and your friends something to do in case you don't feel like raiding or running dungeons - perhaps like now, when the current tier has lasted a bit long, and SoO doesn't have the same appeal as it did before. Note, however, that based on your choices, Adventures could become your form of raiding. Instead of sticking with one raid, you and your friends could do a bunch of raid Adventures in different parts of the world on the same night.
    • It gives each expansion a lasting purpose - Adventures never get out of date, their rewards are simply updated.
    • Because more difficult (newer content) Adventures give higher rewards but take more time, it is up to you whether you want to run a ton of old content fast, or a little bit of new content more slowly. The rewards will be appropriate in the end.
    • It puts people in the world, and makes us visit older continents. We'll revisit old raids, towns, zones, and questing hubs that we had perhaps forgotten and not seen in years.
    • It makes us do a ton of different things in the game; everything from raids to PvP and crafting - but it lets us do it in a dynamic, varied, and fun way. Instead of grinding ourselves crazy doing the same thing over and over, we get a nice mix of things.

That's it for now - feel free to comment!

In a lot of ways, scenarios kinda fit this role. They have multiple objectives, take maybe 20 minutes at most, and reward items + currency.

I see what you mean, but I don't really agree. Sure, scenarios could be expanded to be something similar. But scenarios are still scripted instances tied to the current expansion, take a lot of time to develop, and are generally boring after a few runs.

The Adventures I suggest require mostly UI design, because the content is already there. Plus, their primary purpose is to bring people out in the world, and offer us a diverse amount of content which remains fun and varied throughout the game. Remember, Adventures would have vanilla and all expansions' content packed into hundreds of random 'quests' for you to do. In Mists of Pandaria, you'd have everything up until now at your disposal, and because of how much there is, you'd never run into the situation where you repeat any of it till boredom. In WoD, you'll have the same content plus an added expansion's worth of content. You still won't risk repeating any of it too much, simply because of how much there is. Also, rewards will still be just as relevant, as they will be tuned for every expansion.

It would fit anyone; whether a group of friends wishing to spend an evening terrorizing enemy villages, a solo player wanting to travel around the world, or an entire guild seeking to kill random bosses instead of doing a linear raid.

For instance, you could select PvE, Raid content, and only the newest expansion. That would give you a bunch of Adventures in all Pandaria raid tiers. Because they would also reward you with relevant currencies, as well as the chance of a useful current-tier item, mount, or pet, it would be time well spent. All of a sudden, old Pandaria tiers go from useless and empty to populated and fun.

In another example, your raid might instead select PvE, Raid content, and only Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King content. Then you would instead have a great opportunity to raid your favourite old raids, and still get rewarded for doing so with current, relevant rewards of Mists of Pandaria-quality.

Because the rewards would scale based on your level and the type and age (difficulty) of the content, any Adventure you did would be just as rewarding and demanding as other Adventures.

They need to make heroic scenarios 2 man or solo able, as a Blood DK I have no trouble with soloing anything.

I love it. Its cool to revisit old places in northrend/kalimdor/eastern kingdoms, or even find out about places you have never been to, people will have to travel a little bit again to get to these locations. The world will feel less empty with this

It could work though. Timeless Isle proved that people care more about the color of the text on the tooltip of the gear they get than anything else in the world. If the rewards given by this no-quite-like-dailies system has the correct tool tip text color... people will love it.
It's still nothing like Daily Quests.

Daily Quest: One quest you repeat over and over, and over, and over, and over. Nothing changes, and does not utilize the old content or take you out into the world.

Adventure: An objective chosen randomly for you, partly based on your preferences, out of hundreds or even thousands of possible options. Different place, different objective, different reward, different challenge, different adventure each time.

Really, this needs more attention. Can't people see how this would revolutionise the content of the game?

I'm all for it. I've always wanted a proper reason to go out into the game world instead of it being for achievements or current map content.

I wish there were dailies, or weeklies that sent us to a random place around Azeroth, and we'd have objectives we need to do for both sides if it were PvP. PvE players could do different quests, or go to different zones and you could choose which type you'd like to do like on the Isle of Thunder with the PvP and PvE dailies.

The adventure mode would be a perfect fit for WoW, more so than Diablo. We can't teleport everywhere and we would literally be exploring in the hunt for these objectives. I'd prefer it if implemented, the objective gave us the general area but not pinpointed like quests.

They could even utilize areas that not many people see because the leveling experience is too fast. How about the demon gorge in both ashenvale and winterspring? Netherstorm and SMV? Icecrown is huge yet hardly used.

    Many positives from this!

oqueue addon has a system like this.
Doesn't reward but shows the score for horde and alliance.

But, to add in the OPs post.

There should be multiple difficulties on which rewards depend on.
Maybe make this an alternative way to cap valor and farm gold?

I like the idea of being able to kill bosses from older xpacs for a small, current reward. The scaling feature they are implementing could potentially serve just this purpose.

I think the most natural way to handle rewards would be to go by group size, level of player, and the type of content.

For instance, solo Adventures in Eastern Kingdoms for a solo player would be quite easy, and not take much time beyond travelling. They should reward less, but still enough to make Adventures worthwhile.

Grouping up with 20 people to kill Deathwing would be quite a challenge, and should reward more.

Going after Garrosh on Heroic should obviously give you plenty, since it takes quite a while.

The beauty of this system is the fact that you can play the game however you want, and you will still progress like everyone else without anything ever becoming unfair or unbalanced in terms of rewards.
