I'm sure one or two mages would be enough.

Agreed. Read some of the books like the war of the ancients trilogy. The foot soldiers out number the mages like 1000 to 1. Yet that 1 holds the power of nearly the entire 1000 foot soldiers.

5000 alliance are just characters in a game. 100 soldiers are real people. What kind of a sick mind makes these questions? (btw, why did it have to be alliance? why not 5000 horde? 5000 donkey kongs? 5000 super marios?=) fucking kids.

There are a lot of variables to consider, really. If you were hit by a fireball, would it kill you or rip a limb off? If a caster used Blizzard or Flamestrike, would it instantly those caught in the way? We can all sort of grasp what real-world weapons can do, but not so much what "magic" is fully capable of. After all, Warcraft may have its share of violence, but it's rarely specific in how much damage such things can really cause. We would also need to know, what kind of range are casters getting; is it similar to WoW's range and radius for spells, or is it "as far as the eye can see"?

I would probably lean towards the U.S. Marines, and my reasoning is simply this; mankind in the real-world has spent thousands upon thousands of years refining the art of warfare. There are bullets that can literally tear a man to pieces. That's a pretty terrifying opponent to face, and as much as I enjoy fantasy settings, I don't see many that could stand up to modern weaponry.

Even the best soldiers in the world would struggle against those numbers when met head on. The military would be unsure about these people, and their capabilities. Without introducing "Game Mechanics", we can agree that some element of magic and tech would exist. Even if we only drew from NPCs and not the playable characters.

However, should magic not exist during combat, the marines would still be hard pressed if there are Night Elf Hunters with Bows stalking them in the woods. Even the best trained soldier seldom stands a chance against an elf. Not to draw on too much Anecdotal evidence and Hollywood hype, but if we go back and look at LotR, Two Towers or Return of the King, there were hundreds of thousands of Orcs, ogres, and giants in that army, and Legolas alone brought down 2 huge elephants and a couple hundred orcs.

This entire theory is based completely on undefined variables, in an undefined space. At this point, every guess is a spitball. Ultimately, I would still see the Alliance winning out. Nothing against well trained Marines, but when you have a Gnome infront of you with a chicken launcher, you would probably be distracted just long enough for someone else to get the drop on you... or suffer being turned into poultry.

I would imagine the numbers game is hardly native to just the Alliance.
You forget that Legolas was: 1. A Main Character. Already gets insane abilities on that alone, B. Had plot armor, and C. He was fighting Red Shirts. Of course he's going to do that, the whole thing is staged to make him look as badass as possible (as shown by the thing dying and him sliding down the trunk to a gentle landing).

The average Marine or Alliance military personnel isn't going to be anything like that, even taking into account different races.

The Alliance army is limited to 40 yards, knowing this, marines.

Lets see... they are multiple outcomes.

If the battle was say, on a plain field, then the Alliance would absolutely trample over the troopers.

In the mountains however, large infantry charges are impossible. The marines would have the advantage of speed.

But... it'd be folly for them to just stand there and gun down Alliance. They'd eventually be overrun, sp cover would be needed. Sadly, bullets can't fly around corners, and the marines would have to expose themselves to rushes to shoot back.

If it was a really rugged, dense forest mountan? Marines win.

    Flat, open mountain? Alliance.

The battle would take place in mountains. Marines have the first move.

    GAME MECHANICS DO NOT APPLY.
Bullets kill just like in real life. Healers can heal non-fatal gun wounds, but they can't just stand in place and spam holy light, making anyone who doesn't instantly die invulnerable. Reviving is impossible. Rogues can't magically go invisible in the middle of desert. There are no levels or damage points. 40yd range limit is gone, etc.

Magic users are not omnipotent demigods. They can't just make themselves invulnerable or kill all the marines with a single spell. They're just regular Alliance footmages capable of casting Fireballs, Firebolts, some simple AoE and utility spells.

    Who wins?
This is why Fantasy stays in Fantasy land, and Real World/Real Life stays in Real Life.

    - If it was in game 5000 Alliance soldiers with spells, and things like that - the 5000 Alliance would easily win.
    - If this is 5000 people with swords, and shields vs HEAVILY trained, HEAVILY range weaponized REAL WORLD soldiers - it would be like taking those 100 Marines, and going back in time about 800 years.. - the 100 Marines would easily win.

Assuming that the marines are all armed with NATO firearms with STANAG magazines, and they fire continuously and every single bullet fatally wounds an alliance soldier, they would still have 3000 alliance soldiers running at them before having to reload.

100 marines would struggle against 100 of anything else irl.

Now take into account the "Blue Fire" and there's only 3 marines left. Hue hue hue.

It's called having a fan based version of "What If?". People do it all the time as a means to get the brain going and trying to think outside the box. It's something adults tend to do. If the thread bothers you that much, you are welcome to not post in it.

People have to remember that 5000 is a big number. It means that each marine has to kill on average 50 foot soldiers to succeed.

I would venture Legolas would be more like special forces or navy seals. Granted, the setting in the movie was staged, but, if you were to drop 1 marine through a wormhole, and have him land right next to a highbourne elf, who survives? Or even the other way around. The elf gets sucked through a portal and dropped in front of a marine who is well armed and trained. Is the elf doomed? Does his magic work in this world?

Like I said, there are a ton of unknown variables, but based on the basic laws of magic, even without gameplay mechanics, it would take 1 mage to bring them all down. Summon a huge tidal wave from nowhere and simply levitate or vanish.

Mind control has a limited range. Tactical nuclear strikes don't.
It was stated that the 40 yard range limititations are off the only thing needed is sight. Mages could demolish the area by conjuring blizzards out of sniper range.

Problem is, then it isn't Alliance troops, hehe. Then it is just a bunch of people
