Besides price the two differences I see are
one is GTG with a 6ms vs 5ms
    VA vs IPS

It will be used for Homework and gaming

Short Answer: They're going to be about the same, honestly. Notably, the VA one does not have HDMI. Don't know if that matters to you.

Long Answer: I'm under the impression that VA has slightly better blacks than IPS. They both have better color range/accuracy than TN panels. Either would be a good choice, and you wouldn't see a difference unless you got both and put them side by side. If you play games with lots of blacks (Diablo, EVE, scary stuff), the VA might be nicer.

I'm not sure if you'd notice a difference between the two. That being said, i'd probably go w/ the more expensive one, only because I like the glossy trim and it has a higher contrast ratio.

I'm also under the impression that "Contrast Ratio" is sort of a... not great measurement. As far as I'm aware, there isn't a standard measurement system, so one monitor saying it has a 1,000,000:1 ratio and another monitor saying it has 6,000,000:1 ratio is like saying one has a Potato:1 ratio and the other one has a Fajita:1 ratio.

Thanks for your imput, good stuff

I am leaning towards the first one since its got the better sale and the bonus of coming with an HDMI cord.

There's 2 numbers. Contrast by DCR or dynamic contrast ratio by manipulation of the backlight when certain contents are displayed. DCR is largely useless.
Static contrast ratio is what you're looking for.

VAs have the best black depth and contrast upwards of 5000:1 and as low as 0.02 lux or cdm^2 as opposed to 1000:1 and generally 0.11-0.15 black depth of IPS and TN.

And that means? I've been doing research on this stuff but every little bit of knowledge helps

It doesn't really matter for most people. Black depth is basically how black / dark can the monitor get while powered on. So basically you take a completely black image, how dark is it actually. The lower the better.
Contrast ratio is the difference from lightest to darkest. The higher the better.
