I think Ret Paladins should use a Sheild and a One hand

My Main is a Paladin and I used to run as a ret. I have since switched to primarily Protection spec. Because, lets face it. Retribution Paladins are soooo boring to play. I had so much fun leveling my paladin and then I got to level 90 and started raiding with it in Ret spec and I started falling asleep. Furthermore, there is something wrong with a paladin using a two handed weapon. I don't know what it is. But, when I think paladin. I think Mace and a Shield. I see paladins as Holy Crusaders that weild a Mace and a Shield. So, I think ret paladins should play a little bit more like an enhancement shaman. But with a mace and a shield. I mean Protection paladins already use complete DPS gear to tank with. But, a protection paladin with a 2 handed weapon that would just be silly. My as well just call us DKs...of course Death Knights with the ability to heal themselves seems kind of odd anyhow( I know they do have the ability to heal themselves) but it still seems odd. But, that's a different topic.

I think seems how prot uses DPS gear My as well just make Ret use Mace and a Shield. you could allow them to use axes and swords. It is just a personal ideal that paladins should use a mace. That way you could just use all the same gear for both specs. Blizzard could set it up pretty much like they already have it. Where Protection paladins would get active mitigation abilities and Retribution paladins could get Dmg enhancement abilities. That way Ret paladins could tank in ret spec. They would still have to switch specs to tank.

But, I just think a Paladin looks silly with a 2 handed weapon. Also, the DPS rotation of Retribution paladins needs to be fixed...it's to boring and really doesn't take that much skill to play. It's basically everything on CD. All the time. Plus if I could use Sheilds as a retribution paladin I could use avengers shield which would be alright by me.

Well those are my thoughts. Pls post your thoughts about this. I get a half of penny from Jesus every time someone responds

Do Prot then if you like that playstyle so much. Paladins aren't always using shields. I like my two hander Paladin thank you.

    Subjective opinion is subjective.

Again, subjective, as is my own opinion; but part of the idea behind the Retribution spec is just that. Retribution. You drop a sword/mace and shield for a big 2-handed weapon to serve justice upon your enemies. Particularly demons and undead. I mean just look:

That is the idea of Retribution. You stop an injustice. In this case, Tirion's campaign against Arthas.

the same can be said from so many classes, yet probably only 5% knows how to play their class properly

Just wait for 7.0 and Stance of the Palliator.

(sort-of serious — Blizz is onto a new experimental path of using talent choices to allow you to have a "4th spec" without really having a 4th spec, so if Glad Stance works out they'll probably expand it further)

I think you think wrong then. Retribution is all about 2-handers. Uther (I guess he was the first Paladin in WC history, please correct me if I'm wrong), albeit not a Retribution Paladin per se, wielded a two-handed hammer and Arthas chose two-handed weapons to fight, too. Not to mention Tirion, but he was already covered in a response before.

Ret Paladin playstyle/rotation is also kinda subjective, as the playstyle/rotation wouldn't change just because you're not wielding a two-hander anymore. Picking up a shield wouldn't change anything. For Avenger's Shield you'd need to go Prot even.

Basically, you want a Prot DPS specc, but that is, as unfortunate for you as it may sound, not going to happen anytime soon.

Further, I guess there are many Rets who enjoy swinging two-handers around and smite their enemies with it.

Not soon, but likely to come if that Gladiator-stance becomes a success.

Personally I prefer a two-hander, it really gets me in the retribution mood.
I don't need to protect myself, I need to smite my foes and take as many of them down as possible.
When I change from protection to retribution I imagine throwing my shield down, grabbing the biggest weapon I have and charging into shit to eradicate it.
And my survivability? The Light will protect me while I inflict some Justice..

    I disagree.

On a related note, in lore, Blood Knights often prefer a polearm to a mace (as other
Paladins prefer.) And we have no 1h polearms. =/

Well, I thought a Ret with Sword and Shield would be interesting. I like the idea of having avengers shield in a DPS spec. I remember while I was leveling my paladin the stats on avengers shield were so screwed up at lower levels I could pretty much one shot 3 Mobs that were equal or even a few levels above me.

Also, Dks and paladins parallel one another so much at end game that I thought it would be nice to emphasis the one prevailing difference we have which is the shield. Plus paladin healers also use a shield and they really don't block that much in holy spec. Also, there is the fact that I already stated that paladins use DPS gear in Protection spec. So, why not use Tank weapons in DPS spec. So, I personally thinks it makes sense. I guess the majority of people responding just don't agree.

    I agree with this.
Also I find ret to be quite fun, paladins never been my main but ret I find a lot more fun compared to some other dps classes.

Actually the classic Paladin appearance only has a two-hand Mace and no shield. Ret is fine the way it is.

  14. #14
Actually I think Ret should have dual-wield shields.

I lol'd, but you know what I mean. The idea of the Argent Dawn reforming as the Argent Crusade to stop Arthas from derpin' about for good, or something along those lines.

Lost me at the bolded part. I play ret paladin and I love it. Been doing it since classic, and the class has only gotten better with each expansion.

Point is, your post is completely full of subjective material.

But to add to this conversation, I think there could be some middle ground given though. Protection warriors are getting a talent that allows Prot to be an effective DPS spec at the cost of threat and some survivability. I'm sure protection could swing the same way under the same concept with a new talent or something, or else give Retribution the choice of running between sword + board instead of a 2h, with tweaks and adjustments to bring it right in line with 2h. I'm fine with either of these moves.

As for the boring part I get tired of the neverending Holy Power > Templar verdict combo....with the occasional Divine storm. Protection is far more engaging even though its just a Holy power > SotR combo with the occasional Eternal flame; because, you need to try and watch for high dmg moments to use SoTR and try and Time your EF usage. It makes it more interactive. In PVE its very easy to just zone out and lose focus and just continue Spamming your Templars verdict as ret. PVP it's much less boring. But, that is because you trying to constantly adjust to an ever changing situation.

But, I'm glad your not totally against the idea of Rets being able to use a Shield. I still think the idea was a win. I guess to many ret paladins are stuck in their ways. I thought the idea of avengers shield in a dps spec would have swayed some people.

Point is, your post is completely full of subjective material.
It's an opinionated topic. As a personal philosophy I would assume most posts are opinionated. Especially, in the world of computers. Everything inside this box can pretty much be adjusted at a few keystrokes whenever the powers that be decide. So, its all capable of being adjusted. But, for the most part. Yes, this topic is based entirely on my opinion. As for true belonging of the "paladin" seems how no one alive today was alive in the true time of the paladin it's really hard to say if paladins used sword and shield more or a two handed weapons. The only resources you have to declare one over the other would be a handful of historical references which may or may not be valid. Seems how no one can truly give an eye witness account.

All paladins should wear 2 handed maces and their respective play-style for each spec should be built around that weapon and melee combat

I laughed more than I should of.
Also I disagree too, I see no purpose of it. If your job is to beat things up with a weapon, why would you pick a smaller weapon, and why the heck would you want a shield?
Also I love ret, I don't find it boring at all.

Also it really just sounds like you like tanking, because most dps are just about pressing things on CD and following a set rotation, only really tanking and healing can go outside of that box.
My shaman I guess if you want to see it or something.
