Are Shadow Priests really as bad as people say?

So I am returning to WoW on a fresh account and want to start over with a new class for something new. I have never played Shadow Priest and it looks quite fun. But I have been reading everywhere that Shadow is just plain bad. I also remember during my time raiding in ToT that Shadow was not particularly great but my question to all of you Priests out there! Are Shadow Priests really as bad as people say? It looks like a fun spec to raid with and I will not be pushing Heroic Progression most likely until WoD but even once WoD comes, I'd like to stick to one class. If the class is really as bad as everyone is leading me on to believe.. I might just reroll something else.

If you won't be doing heroic progress then just find a class you like and play it, noone can tell you what you'll enjoy.

Most people who hate shadow think priests should only heal

Shadow is a lot of fun, as long as you keep recount & co out of your field of vision.

I main shadow since the beginning of TBC when I started playing and I would never main something else.

However, DPS just royally sucks right now. If you don't abuse the twisted faith bug on e.g. Malkorok HC, prepare to be dead last in DPS.

If you want a OP class, Warlock/Mage are that way ->

If you won't be doing heroic progress then just find a class you like and play it, noone can tell you what you'll enjoy.
Even in Heroic Progression reasonable people won't ever tell you to reroll.

Well I will be on WoD for sure. Whether it will be on a Priest is another story but Priest is the only class over the years I have not played which is why I am drawn to them now. So ideally.. I would love to raid Shadow from now until whenever I get bored. But is it really so bad currently and in the WoD Alpha notes that it might not be worth the time?

Too soon to tell how we will fare in WoD. You'll have to wait till experienced shadows get their hand on the Beta and start testing.
Right now, Shadow performance is in between underwhelming and frustrating.

If you enjoy Shadow, go roll Shadow. On some fights you'll be mediocre or decent, but on single target you should be dead last. When you beat other classes you can give yourself a pad on the back.

How good a spec is going to be in WoD we don't know but by the looks of it Shadow will receive certain buffs and nerfs. Nerfs to utility, most notably off healing which allows for buffs to single target. The new T7 talents allow for more flexibility in playstyle, allowing us to further adapt to the encounters. We're still in alpha though and theorycrafting isn't done yet. We also don't know the fights yet.

Shadowpriests are fun to play, and dpswise I don't have such a problem keeping up with others, make sure you start a fight with 3 orbs where it's possible and your burst can go skyrocket for a bit

Shadow isn't as bad as people make it out to be, far from it actually!

There is just a bigger gab between the average player and the better ones now which is causing most to say shadow sucks, on multi-target fights they fall behind Locks / Mages yes, but on single target they are middle of the pack easily.

W/o abusing ToF uptime? Not if your other raid members know what they are doing and have similar gear.
If you have a skilled Mage/Lock, they will utterly destroy you.

I've had times early this xpac where I got high ranking parses as shadow and still wasn't near top dps in my group against people who weren't ranking at all. My mage and lock do a gross amount more dps at the same ilvl as my spriest. Yes, shadow is in a bad spot outside fights with the right scenarios for multi-dotting. I still enjoy the spec. If you enjoy a different dps spec just as much though I'd recommend choosing it for the rest of this tier.

Wow so its that bad huh :/ Its too bad lol. I am bored of how many Warlocks there are so rolling Warlock is a no. Mage I've played too much before. No other Rdps really peaks my interest aside from Hunter but this is the Priest forum, we shall not speak of Hunters here :d

The good thing is that in WoD it seems that we can specialise in Single-Target or Multitarget; but the problem might be that we still need 2 equips for different encounters:

    Mastery for Single-Target
    Multistrike for Multi-Targets
    Most Profitable Profession: Datamining

    1) You won't be able to farm tertiary stats that easily.
    2) If it really goes live with us NEEDING (as in making a significant difference) 2 equips for different encounters, it's a major design epic fail.

Blizzard said it won't be needed, just something you may wanna swap if you wanna min max everything. Since we lose most of what is now known as enchanting, gemming, reforging I don't think having a few off pieces in your bags is a particularly Bad Thing. Especially if you consider they'll also fix bag space issues (currently don't have enough room for ToF naked O.o).

    Tell me about it...
My poor priestess has to carry half her wardrobe with her, because the bank is close to exploding due to a too high concentration of transmog gear.

But then again: Who wants to undress before the whole raid?!

To them we're just a shadow, naked or not.

Q: Who wants to ninja pull when I am half naked?
    A: Army of the Dead

You can safely roll shadow.. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, and it's certainly not cutting edge at this point. A good player can certainly make it work.

Being a shadowpriest is not going to hinder your progression. In fact it has some utility in the form of offhealing, which can help a bit (whether it should be needed is another discussion).

damage, utility, buffs, debuffs and offhealing are the worst of all the classes. compared to other equally geared/skilled classes shadow is just plain shit
