I saw one movie (Castle in the Sky) for free through some online streaming service. I thought seeing how anime can be seen for free in the West with no consequences, this'd be fine too right? Wrong. I asked my friend about it after I saw the movie, and he said while he's not sure what consequences will rise out of what I did, if I ever do it again, I'm probably going to get a visit from law enforcement and likely sent to prison with a fine to pay. He said to never watch movies for free as its a risk 9999x greater than anime.

Please help.

What country are you in to begin with?

In Germany, as far as I remember, it has been ruled that streaming isn't considered a ''download'', therefore people streaming can't receive a fine/wouldn't be considered a ''criminal''.

We had this problem last year with people streaming porn....

OP: Phone your family and close friends. Explain the situation, and tell them you won't be seeing them for a long time. Then get a lawyer, and wait for the inevitable.

Are the responses in here serious? I'm not taking this lightly. I really didn't know the consequences with movie streaming in comparison with anime.
