Why does America remake British shows rather than air the original?

    Examples of remakes...

    Being Human
    Broadchurch
    The Inbetweeners
    The Office
    Queer as Folk
    Shameless
    Skins
    And many many more

    The accent and humor.

    British; subtle and dark
    US; *SLAP* AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
You must become a Master Baiter if you want to want to master the One-eyed Fish of the Dark Caverns!

It may be some kind of strange law that requires them to have American employees/actors/etc in the making of the show for it to be aired in the States. I don't really know.

The Broadchurch remake is just a heinous crime.

No canned laughter, Americans need to be told when to laugh?

    Because we do it better.

    Example: Dr. Who.

The Inbetweeners USA was literally the worst thing since Hitler, I was 300% done with American tv after that.

There's an American Dr. Who? Where can I find this atrocity?

Hmmmm, I don't have any TV services, so I'm not sure about this, but doesn't BBC America show british shows? I certainly have no trouble finding them on Netflix. I know PBS used to play a lot of British TV too. I loved Jeeves and Wooster back in the day.

The fact that the US likes to remake them is just flattery in its highest form.

Though I'd probably be pissed if they made an American Doctor Who.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Doctor Who has been getting steadily more terrible for years, weak stories and paling in comparison to what it used to be. Viewing figures and public perception agree. But yeah... "thanks" I guess

I get some US shows over here in the UK and every now and then watch them with the wife. I end up having to explain a lot of the references because she may not know who the joke refers to and therefore why it is funny. TBH I probably only get the reference due to a misspent youth watching Family Guy or South Park. I think the remakes come down (at least in large part) to localisation; swapping names, places and such so your audience can follow without thinking too hard about it.

I don't really considering making a bastardized remake as flattery when they could show the original to many more instead

I've really only even heard of one of these shows let alone watch any of them. Usually it's because British humor is different than American humor and to increase ratings, make it something more Americans would watch. If an American wants to watch the British version then the internet probably can find it.

Got me OP. The only one I watched on that list was Shameless.

I'll stick to the British stuff.

*shrug* Maybe in the American market it makes more financial sense to make a version Americans feel they can associate with more? I dunno, my best guess.

Oh a stupider level... Honestly there are accents I can listen to for only so long... I mean no offense by this though and can understand if there are those who feel the same about mine.

Although, aren't there show concepts that started here and eventually had a version/spin-off elsewhere? Kinda the same thing, which I see no harm in. (Can I provide examples though.. not really, I hardly watch much tv at all.)

Yes but the majority of remakes don't increase ratings and get cancelled fast
