We are already outraged by the mistreatment of our vets. But maybe if we had better health care reform instead of what the Republicans would allow us to have we could better treat them and everyone. But oh no, EVIL SOCIALISM!!!

There are only somewhere around 1700+ VA hospitals though. As a disabled vet I can say the VA hospitals are shitty as all get out. I don't waste my time with them. They have been shitty for a long fucking time and they will continue to be just that until someone with real leadership abilities takes the reigns.

I totally agree that the VA system is shit. We've got the biggest military budget on the planet and apparently we can afford to repair a multi-million-dollar jet but we can't repair our soldiers and I agree that's pretty bullshit.

Jesus Christ have we as a nation become incapable of identifying problems and fixing them without going on a huge detour to talk about whether or not it's Obama's fucking fault?

My reaction to this post is: why. You're taking an issue that existed before ACA and you are blatantly politicizing it. This does not help veterans. This just directs attention away from real problems (why are wait lines long? is it a lack of doctors? lack of resources? inefficiency?) which need addressing.

The United States has a long history of up selling to soldiers and not following threw on promises given to them. This isn't a shock and it's been the case for years. The VA has had problems for decades.

Think of all the homeless vets there is. Think of all the vets with serious mental issues. These things are not new. It's just this country likes to pay platitudes in place of giving the real things vets need.

There are departments in the VA that are just sucking tax payer dollars right out of the system. When I got out of the Corps I called my VA office to set up classes for job rehabilitation/training and job placement. I was told, "Sorry we no longer provide that service just go to your unemployment office." The person I spoke to was the head of that department and I came to find out he still had a full staff. Bastards sitting there collecting a paycheck doing absolutely shit.

But seriously, it's a problem throughout the healthcare system, not just the VA. Anecdote: I know someone (not a veteran, in private healthcare) who needs mental health treatment and she's been on a waiting list for a couple months because her initial assessment was that she's a "non-critical" case. Yeah.

I'm not sure how to fix it.

This isn't a party problem. This is a country problem. We have lied to vets since the start. Clear back in the Revolutionary War we were lying to and then screwing over soldiers. Our country's politicians make promises they know they can not keep and then break said promises with out any penalty.

We the people of the United States accept this by re electing the same people time after time after we see and know they are corrupt and lie. The only part of this story that would be shocking would be that people really didn't know about this to begin with.

We call them our greatest heros then pay them less then most other government workers. We call them heros then force them into a health care system we know is failing. It's much more eazy to pay in platitudes then anything else and that's the one thing they can be sure of, all the praise, all the kind words one can muster and they can count on that because it's free. When it times for the bill tho they find that nothing is too good for our vets, pay any cost doesn't go very far when it means it will cost something.

It's Bush's fault that the VA sucked before Bush was in office?

It's Bush's OR Obama's fault that the system was pretty much designed to fail?

Your argument of "NO U" might have some validity if I actually blamed Bush for this, which I don't. I don't expect any president to know what everyone in the government is doing every minute of the day.

And for the record, there are some things Bush did that I actually like: PEPFAR. Sure, it had its problems and still has problems but it has saved millions of lives and I'm not going to dispute its efficacy or humanitarian impact because Bush did it, even though that seems to be the stereotype you're so desperately trying to push on me. That's not to say I like Bush, though.
