    Lightbulb Celebrate Geek Pride Day!

Today is Geek Pride Day, a day when we celebrate, what else but all
    things geeky! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek_Pride_Day

Most people think geeks are tech obsessed and fashionably stunted people
but the range of geekiness is actually much wider than common knowledge
suggests. Geeks are people who have a strong passion for something. They
are the people who get really into what they love that it becomes an integral
part of who they are. Geeks can answer even the most absurd questions about
    their chosen obsession.

So, what's your obsession? What's your most proud moment of nerdiness?

    • I'm obsessed with plenty: video games, movies, books, television, history, etc.
    • I once joined a large group of strangers in a park for a LARP session while dressed
      as Monty Python's Sir Robin.

Sorry, but this is cringeworthy even for an MMO forum.

    Everyone's a geek/nerd now.

I just find it more annoying year on year having parts of "nerd" culture appropriated for commercialism and a false community. Don't get me wrong, "nerds" do have a community, DnD was a big thing for my mates and I growing up. But let's be honest, "nerdfighters" and all this nonsense?

God this is just cringe worthy.

    Somewhat accurate.

I wouldn't say it's cringe worthy, but I don't seem to have any situations of which I could be all like "YEAH I DID THIS THING", except helping people with their computers...

Although my fashion sense is fine, thank you very much!

Join a community of some sort, usually a good gaming club/dnd club in most medium urbanized areas.

OT: Since when is "geek" synonymous with otaku?

I hope the 4 people in the world who are proud to be geeks have a good time.

Lol. "Geek Pride Day"... Being proud of having hobbies and interests?

All this is is a chance for people who aren't into "geek culture" (which seems to mean videogames, dnd, sci-fi and fantasy) to pretend they are and make a big song and dance about how much of a cool "geek" they are. I'm sure many t-shirts and plastic glasses will be sold.

I am deeply saddened by this.

I knew Geek was dead when every thug jock was high fiving and playing Counter-Strike and calling themselves nerds or geeks. : /

But, I suppose to the OP post I'm by that description not a geek in anything. Well not anymore.

Hold on. Lemme get the permits and can start a parade in NY.

We have a surprising lack of...well...anything in my area. Although my friend did try getting us all to play DnD once, I just got bored of it. The only thing nearby is a Friday Night Magic group really, but I don't have standard cards from them to play with them, but I know most of them anyway.

OP, what do you think being a geek actually is? If a hobby is now considered mainstream then in my opinion it is no longer geeky. When I was a school kid it was mostly geeks that plays video games, now it is rare to find a teen that does not not game. Same as playing Warhammer, 15 years ago it was laughed at but now it is a multinational company.

I like geek day. I geek on all kinds of things Comics, WoW, cars, beer, music, Constitutional Law, TV/Movies, DnD and food. One of my biggest geek things is I have a room for my comics in my house. Started as a closet, then a portion of a room, now its pretty much the entire room sans a bed and dresser and desk that are overflow from when my wife and I moved in together. I've been to over 100 concerts/shows/festivals as well. I have a film collection of over 1k vhs/dvds. I travel hours to surrounding states to eat a certain restaurants as well. I am about to take my Cicerone test this year or maybe next depending on what my work time allows.

Things I wish I was a geek about...math. I just don't know much more than the basics and wish I did, now to find the time But my job doesn't allow for much time in that realm.

My first big geek out things were comics, dnd, early video games, star wars and Magic the gathering (btw fuck WotC and this money pit of a game).

To me being a geek is taking something you are passionate about and throwing yourself completely into it. Absorbing tons of knowledge about it and spending a lot of time learning about it and appreciating it more so than the average fan or person would. Geek means more than a character from Revenge of the Nerds. What most of you are describing as geek is being a fucking hipster and saying I did it when it wasn't cool, now that its cool its not geek/nerd anymore. You are describing hipsters who think that because they found something first it gives them some right to claim its label. Good examples Lebron James is a basketball geek, while Dewight Howard plays basketball. Steve Woznaik was a computer nerd, Steve Jobs sold computers and technology.

Or beer? Nothing could be more mainstream than cars and beer.
