    R9 290 or GTX 780

Hey guys, I am looking at getting a new GPU tomorrow and am kind of torn as to which one I should get.

NCIX has the Gigabyte R9 290 Windforce OC on sale for $450

Zotac GTX 780 OC for $530 before MIRB.

Bear in mind these prices are in Canadian dollars, GPU's have been absurdly expensive lately so I am trying to get the best performance for my dollar right now. My understanding is that the GTX 780 is flat out better in most games, however is the $80 price difference justified in this case? Because realistically for an extra $30 I can get the R9 290X with the same cooler model as the R9 290.

i had to make the same choice as you this year.... r9 290x or something more expensive. in many tests i've seen so far the 290x had scratches on it under ther cooler fluid, which will reduce performance and durability. went with 780ti, just to be safe and no disappointment this far.

Well I am not about to drop $830 for a graphics card, that much I can assure you of. Besides, I don't need pure top end, just something that is going to run Star Citizen decently when it starts rolling out and will play most of my games on ultra settings.

I went with this card if it is any consolation.

Apparently strongest card per dollar last I checked (When ordered).

    290.

The 780 and 290 are on par with each other.

Mabe you should choose based on the games you play, different games run better on different cards

Then I wouldn't bother with anything less than R9 290X or GTX 780 Ti.

the R9 290 and GTX 780 perform almost the same. With some games like battlefield 4 the R9 290 is better and with other games the GTX 780. The R9 290 however is almost 100 euros cheaper. I purchased a R9 290 last week and it runs like a dream its a real beast, does get hot tho so do get a aftermarket cooler one. Edit: o i see you wanna maybe buy the Gigabyte R9 290 Windforce OC then deffo go with that one. Here is a good site with nice info. xxx.overclock.net/t/1436497/official-amd-r9-290x-290-owners-club (replace the xxx with www im not allowed to post links yet lol im such a noob)
