Losing Video when attempting to OC

Hi all!

I'm a newbie at overclocking and when I attempt to increase my base clock by 10% I lose my graphics. The comp starts fine. I get the beep. Keyboard, etc is all lit up, but no signal on the display. I can't get my graphics back until I take out the mobo battery and put it back in.

Anyone know a specific cause for this?

Look up an overclocking guide about your CPU. You don't overclock modern Intel CPUs with base clock increases, for example.

You're probably overclocking the BLK (for Intel CPUs which usually default at 100mhz) or CPU frequency (AMD CPUs which usually default at 200mhz) OR the PCIE Clock MHZ is overclocked which prevent the video card from working.

Any overclocks that require beyond changing CPU clock Ratio/Multiplier are more advanced overclock, you'll need a guide to understand the whole thing.

Also, avoid automatic overclocks unless supervised.

Change the multiplier, not the base clock as Warrax has stated.

Your over clocking your PCI-E when you OC the BLK, which is causing the problem you are having.

Hi all after seeing Iooz comment I took his advice and found a guide for my CPU.

Turns out I had some bad luck with my chip and is only stable at 4.3 GHz, Guess it happens, but it is an overclock!

Whats your CPU?
Whats your vCore at idle and under load?
Did you enable LLC overvolting?
Whats your cooler?
Did you disable energy saving state (C3, C6 etc)?
Whats your motherboard lol ?

By the way 4.3ghz is a very good OC for a noob

Whats your CPU? - Intel Core i5 4670K
Whats your vCore at idle and under load? I'm not sure what the difference is, but I set it to 1.180 which was the lowest I could have it to start up.
Did you enable LLC overvolting? I'm sorry I don't know what this is.

Seeing that it is haswell it's a good enough result with 212 evo. Temps ramp up quickly after that and you need something beefier.

I found that when I had it at 4.4 GHz the temps were consistently jumping past 85 C. Thus the reason I dropped to 4.3 and the volts to match and now on a high stress test they only reach around 82 C and while actually gaming etc Haven't see them even get to 80.

I really feel like I'm getting the hang of things in regards to building this computer and doing the OC. The help of the community here has been exceptional.
