Holy shit, how long exactly do you expect this magical paid maternity leave to last?

You don't "raise your kid" on maternity leave you just tend to its infantile needs.

Raising your kid is something done over its entire pre-adult life.

And kids' behaviour is strongly influenced by the attention they are given in the first few months of its life.

Classic broken window fallacy. Obama is wrong in every circumstance of that statement. It may make sense to have paid maternity/paternity leave on social grounds, but it isn't going to make a difference on the economy. It will in fact have a detrimental effect on economic production, though likely not to a statistically relevant level. That's how societal choices work. You make a choice and there is an economic cost to enforcing said choice.

Even long term, like after a generation or two?

Yeah, businesses love paying employees for doing no work. It's a great way to run a business.

Judging from your post, neither do you.

Or they could, you know, do like Scandinavian countries are doing where the government pays for portion of the salary and the business doesn't have to pay anything.

Oh wait, I forgot - this is USA where no logic that works everywhere else can be applied because it's like another dimension.
