    Questions about this build

    http://pcpartpicker.com/p/98qFK8

    CPU: i5 4670K
    Cooling: Noctua NH-D14
    Mobo: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150
Case: Corsair 500R Black ATX Mid Tower
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600
    GPU: ASUS GTX 770
PSU: Corsair RM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX

The main question is even though pcpartpicker lists no incompatibility issues I've read reviews on the Noctua NH-D14 that it's pretty big and you may not be able to get memory with big cases like Vengeance/Ripsaw/etc. Being the pc building novice that I am will I run into those issues with my choices? Criticism on the build is welcome as well. However, if you're going to give me other options stick close to the prices I have on things.

As you said these ram sticks won't fit below that cooler. You can get a similarly fast ssd for less and better hdd. I feel you are spending more on some things than needed and you can get more power out of your budget especially the gpu and you can probably fit a better monitor as well. What would the max budget be?

I'm trying to stick below $2k as much as possible. I suppose I'll have to look further into the ssd/hdds. The gpu I could probably spend less going with amd but, I've had driver issues out the butt with the one I do have and I just want to ignore going that route.

I am sure why you need the sound card, doesn't seem to make any difference from the asus on board one. I left it there but i'd say save the 20bucks there and sticks below 2k. Added similar ssd for less money and more reliable hdd. Hey new gen i7k there, similar cpu cooler, better/faster ram, gtx 780, similarly good psu and better monitor by far. Dunno why you would want cherry mx green switches on keyboard. I took this as an oversee and went with a full keyboard with mx brown ones.

I switched it around a bit to give you a better GPU. It is $50 more, but will perform splendidly. The Dark Rock 3 is very close to the D14 for cooling.

@Kostattoo - The reason for the soundcard is because, I've never really looked into motherboards to see if their onboard audio was up to par with cards. Seeing as onboard audio is good enough I think I can do away with the extra card, lol.

I do appreciate the lists from both of you, gives me more options.

I've not selected the other items, as they come down a lot to personal preference. I prefer the R9-290 for pricing reasons (~$100 less for similar performance). If you didn't need an internal optical drive, I'd happily recommend the NZXT H440 case.

@tenangrychickens - I'm trying to avoid AMD cards as I've had too many driver issues with my current one even after I had it RMA'd. I'm also trying to stick to mid tower cases as a full tower isn't going to fit under my desk on the shelf. (retail link of workstation desk http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50219044/). The memory is of normal size so I could probably swap back to that cooler like in my original setup.

    Okay, no problems.

In that case, i'd definitely consider the 780 or the 780Ti, but I just don't think they're value for money at the moment. As for mid-towers, I'd look at the 400R (or the 330R if you want a quieter PC - you'll lose some heat performance, though).

I'm probably going to start purchasing this Monday or Tuesday and before I do so I have 1 last question. There's 3 additional slots for case fans, should I buy more? The case comes with 2x 120mm in front, 1x 120mm in back, 1x 220mm in side. It has 2 slots on top for exhaust and 1 on the bottom for intake. I know to keep positive air you want more intake than exhaust so of course I wouldn't want 3 more fans.

Ok another question as well so I lied about 1 additional, lol. If I do buy more case fans will I need an additional fan controller or will I be able to hook the extras into the built-in one on the case.

If the case you want has an internal fan-controller, then you'll need to hook the fans into that first, then hook that up. Most motherboards have multiple fan points on the board.
