    Help with First build please.

Hey all, first time building a custom PC. Below is a list of items I've put together off of UMART. The total build cost will be just over $1200, plus the cost of windows 7, unless you can suggest a better OS. What I'm curious about is, are all the parts going to work well with each other. I'm mainly going to be playing WoW with the system, no video editing or anything like that. I might at a later date get Skyrim, or a couple FPS, but nothing overly serious. I want to be able to run wow on max graphics, everywhere, with very very little lag. I live in Australia, I have a total budget of around $1500, but since I already have monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and headphones, I only need a new tower. Thanks in advance and if I've left anything out, please don't hang me, I'm new to this.

    CPU

    RAM

    Mobo

    HDD

    SSD

    Graphics Card

    PSU

    Case

    DVD-RW

EDIT: Or would I be better off just getting something like this This

    Motherboard: ASRock Z97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($157.00 @ CPL Online)
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($102.00 @ Mwave Australia)
    Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($149.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.00 @ CPL Online)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($369.00 @ CPL Online)
Case: Corsair SPEC-02 ATX Mid Tower Case ($75.00 @ CPL Online)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($83.12 @ Mwave Australia)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer ($22.00 @ CPL Online)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($115.00 @ CPL Online)
    Total: $1453.12
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you want to lower the budget some a XFX Radeon R9 270X 2GB Double Dissipation would bring the total to $1,283 and is still quite good for WoW, the 280X will let you push things further, especially in other titles.

The build includes Windows (8.1). There is really no reason not to go with 8.1, if you're uncertain of the UI you can easily change it yourself or use free Classic Shell and it'll look pretty much like Windows 7. Future support is better, better memory management, better SSD support etc.

You can get a Win8.1 64bit key for $24 here.
You can verify that key with Microsoft tool
Downloaded the image and mount it with their USB tool

You don't need a DVD drive.

(I need to mention it because someone else probably will, it's likely an MSDN key and could in theory be deactivated. i've bought from them myself with no issues)

Thanks for that =D. The only issue here is that I don't have anyone to build it for me and I'm not confident enough to do it myself. With places like umart they will assemble and ship with warranty on the build. I was also considering just buying a pre built computer through someone like pccase gear. They seem to be priced fairly well, I put one of their computers components on newegg, and even being in Australia, they were only about $50 higher for the total cost, which is pretty good I think. I don't know, I have like a month before I'm going to be buying the system. Thanks again for taking the time to go through all that =D. Also I did not know that about windows 8.1, Ive always been told that it blows and isn't good for gaming.

That's people letting their biases overrule the actual quality of the OS. It feels quicker than Win7 on my current rig, and most people hate the tiles of the Metro UI, which is almost optional now.

Building it yourself is not hard at all, it's like lego for adults. Just take your time and use the motherboard manual to see where various cables go.

Windows 8.1 is fine, people saying it's not good for gaming have no idea what they're talking about.

Even if you decide for uMart perhaps you can find similar components? Or perhaps you have a friend that can assist you for the building process.

Okay, so I've been slack, but my wife is really hounding me to build my pc since it's a gift. So I pulled my finger out and have come up with this.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions on alternative parts available from mwave. I priced similar builds at other sites and these guys come out cheaper. Yes I could buy all the bits myself and assemble it, but I'm not overly confident and I don't want any issues.

All that budget and you get that gpu? 650W psu with a gtx 750ti? i mean that system wont even need 300watts.

You don't wanna build it yourself, fine, get the following that is alot better than the build above and spend the rest 100-120 to have a shop build it for you.

btw just in case you are wondering. I wouldn't even consider a gtx 750 ti much of a gaming gpu, its on the low end. Compared to a R9 280 is night and day.

You can, if you go a little over, fit in a GTX970 in the budget:

You sacrifice some performance elsewhere in order to fit in what is an amazing GPU. For an extra ~AU$30, you can get something like the MSI TFV 970.

On a side note, I cant remember where. I read that the 750I 2G gpu's were good for games, especially if all you are doing is mainly wow.

Yes its good for questing , but when you enter a busy city or go raid then things change dramatically. Also depends what you mean good. 60fps at medium-low settings? We are talking ultra here.

  11. #11
Yeah I do want to run on ultra all the time, aside from maybe slightly adjusting stuff when in 25mans or in av or something when there's around 40 people in a small area. I dont mind if fps drops to around 30-40 under load, but right now it drops to around 2fps (on low low low settings) and sometimes just crashes the game all together, so in all reality ANYTHING at this stage will be better haha. In saying that, Ive done a bit more reading and I think I am confident enough to try building my own system, so I came up with this..

Build seems mostly ok-ish, some notes:

    - The gpu, i wouldn't reckon it cause of heatpipe misallignment not matter what evga says. You wanna look at the ACX2.0 version, or another brand (which means more money unfortunately). You can max graphis with R9 280 / gtx 760 in wow, but for more gpu intensive games the 970 rocks in performance and price/perf ratio.

    - Power supply, just change it, get the one i linked, its better and cheaper although non fully/semi modular. There is a version of it modular tho, Antec HCG-620M

    - Case aesthetics are subjective, just look if it has dust filters, or add your own.
