There was a Tumblr-Con this weekend. It ended in disaster

''DashCon, a startup fandom convention that aimed to be "the largest gathering of Tumblr users to date" took place over the weekend at a hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois... and has been widely described as "a complete disaster" with social media having been flooded since Friday night (July 11th) with reports of organizational ineptitude, poor planning, chaotic crowd behavior and shady, possibly fraudulent, financial doings.

Late Friday night, blogs and videos from attendees began hitting the web describing the dissolution of committees, disorganized (or nonexistant) panels, nearly-empty event rooms and alleging that minors were being admitted to sexually-explicit 18+ events. In addition, the convention's most prominent celebrity guests, the Welcome to Night Vale podcast, canceled their appearance after discovering that DashCon's organizers were unable to pay them as had been agreed. The convention staff offered to compensate those who had reserved seats for Night Vale with entry into a raffle and "an extra hour with the ball pit."

    Yet another failed convention.
Why would people who use a social media app go to a convention for it.
That was their first mistake, making a convention based on crap.

The organisers using that ball pit just makes this seem like they purposely trolled everyone going.
Like they new it was absolute crap, and the ball pit was just them showing their troll colours.

Lol even if it was planned well enough, it still would be a disaster.

The real question is: Is the source the source used the Onion?

Too be fair, even with a source, it still sounds too stupid to be real.

But, what can one expect from tumblr?

Why don't you use google , or click the link , or use common sense.

It's not a satire article , the organisers are actually getting called out for fraud and there could be legal repercussions.

What the actual fuck? Even though I don't use tumblr, this is literally 10 minutes from where I live. Not sure how I heard nothing about it whatsoever.

Ah, Tumblr... I somehow feel like this thing perfectly sums up the stereotypical member.

Oddly, that's still better than I'd have expected a Tumblr convention to go. Still a hilarious failure. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go laugh heartily for a while.

Bloody hell is that nonsense. I must agree with the idea that this was a borderline troll attempt, that may blow up in their face.

Also you're wrong, the people who agree with you are wrong, and you're probably ugly.
Ever been so angry at everyone on the internet you tell a woman she is mansplaining?

Too stupid to be real... now if that isn't bang on a great description of tumblr.

These people blog on tumblr because that's all their capable of doing. They are powerless and useless in the real world. This result isn't just unsurprising, it's inevitable.

That picture is just...so sad; yet fucking hilarious at the same time! What's the point in going to a social media convention, then just hanging with your clique of friends? It's like a high school lunch room ffs lmao!

It looks more like a scam , at one point they demanded the attendees get together $17K to keep the event going.

They actually do the hunger game salute at one point , I had to turn it off in fear I might be paralised in cringyness for the rest of my days.

In that sense, I suppose the convention was a rousing success. It perfectly displays the competence and abilities of Tumblr bloggers when they're required to do something other than whinge over the internet.

Apparently, some of the people dashcon, who were getting paid to come do panels and what-not had to pay for their own rooms when they went to check out because dashcon did not foot the bill so they're going to take legal action.
