Advice needed - purchasing a new graphics card!

My current graphics card has failed me and so I'm in need of a new one if I hope to get back into playing games again! I have a budget of roughly £50-£100 and I mostly use my PC to play MMO's, browse various sites and watch videos on Youtube. I am looking for a reliable graphics card that will allow me to play the likes of FFXIV, ESO, WoW, Wildstar and Skyrim on very high graphics.

For those curious this is my current PC setup:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...but no way will can get a graphics card £50-100 that will play those games on very high settings.

I reckon the cheapest card you could get with decent performance you're looking for is an AMD R9-280X. They start at £200.
CPU: Ivy Bridge i5-3570K OC @ 4.2 GHz, Cooler: ARTIC Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2
    MB: ASUS P8Z77-V LE, RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM
GPU: MSI R9-280X, Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE
SSD: 120GB SanDisk SSD, HDD: 2x 1TB Seagate HDD in RAID 0
PSU: OCZ 700W (multi-rail) PSU, Case: Cooler Master Elite 334U case
Monitors: ASUS VE247H & ASUS VE228H Cooling: Totes cute Akasa 120mm Rainbow LED fans

Ouch! That's a bit above my budget. What about one of the following:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-GeForce-...=graphics+card

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nvidia-GeFor...=graphics+card

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-GeForce-...=graphics+card

Would one of those three work and allow me to play the listed games on high settings?

  4. #4
Of the three, I'd say the 750 Ti by a long shot. You'd be getting playable frames at Medium, most likely.

  5. #5
I think you're using a Radeon HD 7870, which is a ~$200(147 euros) card, so anything you get around your budget will be worse.

Something a little over your budget would be a gtx 750 ti, something in your budget would be a gtx 650.

  6. #6
R9 270 or R9 270X would be only slightly above your budget and would give a bit better performance than your old 7850 (assuming you had that).
A 750 Ti is not worth it imo, even r7 260X has better performance and is cheaper, http://www.hwcompare.com/17288/gefor...adeon-r7-260x/

The latter of the two seems pretty well priced given his budget.
Start trying to work out who deserves what, and before long you’ll spend the rest of your days weeping for each and every person in the world.

Of the ones listed I'd say the GTX 750ti is the best...and a quick look on youtube shows its actually fairly decent in the games you mentioned.

However, if you can stretch your budget to £120 you can get an R9-270 from Scan: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-x...-dvi-hdmi-plus, which would be really pretty decent.

Thanks for the advice! I've arranged to have someone come and check out my PC to ensure that it's definitely an issue with my graphics card. I'm pretty sure it is but it doesn't hurt to be cautious with these things.

Correct the GTX 750ti trades punches with the R9 270, but the R9 270 does edge out by a little bit.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! Rather than make a new thread I figured I'd ask here since it's relevant to the subject - how easy is it to switch out an old graphics card for a new one? Would it be best to hire someone to do it on behalf or is it something that I can genuinely do easily by consulting a self-help guide online?

Oh...it totes the easiest thing to do yourself! Here's a vid that explains all about it (plus another about removing the 1st card if you not sure):

You need more time to open the new gpu's box, getting the card out and opening your case than replacing the gpu

Uninstall old Graphics Drivers using http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/ and https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to make sure all the old stuff is gone. Download the new drivers for whatever card you'll be using. Open your PC up, unscrew the old card from the case, unlock the slot(if you need to), take it out. Put the new card in, screw it in, start up, install drivers, done. Easy.

To my understanding the R7 260X is on par with the 750ti, although is cheaper. I think it'd be about £90.

The R7 265 would be acceptable and was £90 last week on offer, however, is now above your price range slightly.

A bit over your budget is the R9 270X that could just offer you an acceptable performance based on your expectations, If you were to lower them to high as opposed to ultra.
