Puppy and Dolphin (setup of the month)

    Hello MMO,
about your thread Computers - Setup of the Month, i have one question. In your Puppy and Dolphin setup, offer motherboards ASUS M5A97 R2.0 and ASUS M5A99FX PRO, this mb´s have only PCIe 2.0 x16, but graphic cards Gigabyte R7 260X and ASUS R9 270X need PCIe 3.0, this will be problem right ? Graphic cards with PCIe 3.0 dont work on MBs with PCIe 2.0. Just ask, please explain.

    Thanks

PCIe 3.0 is backward compatible with existing PCI Express Versions.

    Hi..quick check & you're right they both have PCIe 2.0 not 3.0:

However, the graphics card should work work. Just checked some forum's..some say no noticeable difference in performance others say 1-3% difference.

AM3+ is discontinued and several years old. It does not support PCI-e 3.0 and never will. The only AMD chips that support PCI-e 3.0 now are the Trinity, Richland, and Kaveri APU's (which are not recommended for high end gaming machines). That said, PCI-e is forward and backward compatible. PCI-3.0 graphics cards will work in 2.0 slots, and vice versa. And even the 780ti does not quite push enough bandwidth to max out PCI-e 2.0 x16 let alone 3.0.

Unless you are building an APU-based system for a specific reason (extremely low budget, or to use as a media machine), do not go AMD. The AMD FX processors are all discontinued and are so far behind Intel (the highest end FX-9590 barely matches the Pentium G3450 in WOW) that they really aren't worth getting. For a WOW-only machine you are FAR FAR FAR better off getting an i5 (or if you can't afford that, an i3).
