Unless it's a graphical thing and his intended hair is NYI, the shaving of his head could have some significance with Thrall's story/ development.

No orc seems to enjoy the "Thrall"/ slave aspect of his character. It seems everyone he meets on his journeys tells him to drop that "filthy human name" and essentially all the negative connotations associated with it. This has put a lot of pressure and internal conflict on Thrall, having a constant clash of two identities. Possibly the shaving of Thrall's ponytail is symbolic of him no longer being a slave to his burdens.

I might be horrendously wrong, but don't some real life cultures wear a ponytail/ long braid as a sign of slavery or loyalty to a master?

Sure, I'll trust an old as hell statement even though Thrall was the main hero of Cata, Metzen swings the Doomhammer everywhere he goes, and meanwhile his ''favorite'' character is barely present in WoW, and has a small role in Cata.

Someone mentioned eyebrows. Here is an interesting find. Go to your character creation screen and pay attention to which race/gender combos do and do not have eyebrows. Most alliance males have eyebrows that change with hair color. Most females, regardless of faction have painted on eyebrows that change with the face. But most horde males have no eyebrows at all.
