They both show up on raids thought reliably and are about equal in skill. They kill a boss and a trinket drops that is BIS for both. it is bigger upgrade to the guy who has not spend the money and effort to get crafted gear, but the other with his crafted gear was able to squeeze the extra dps so they got the kill.

Who it goes to? Well this happened in my guild and the item went to the guy it was bigger upgrade and so benefited the raid most. The guy who had spend the gold and effort was not so happy and decided not to take any effort to get crafted gear anymore. Thus maybe slowing the guilds progress in the future.
We've always used Loot Council in my guild and back when we were that random shit guild rank #1500+ we had that same thing happen. Only we had gold in the bank and told the guy who had spend time/gold on something, that the guild bank would refund his costs to at least make it a bit fair. We also made it very clear, that people who put more effort in, would also be the people first in line for a spot while the lazy fucks could sit on the bench.

This is generally the case in any top guild, and all the players understand that means sometimes you have to wait because you need to funnel gear to locks because they are OP, or specific classes are needed to stack the hardest encounter, or whatever.

But when you get down to the world 1500th guild, its harder to do that. Even if the loot council is unbiased and knows what they are doing, the mentality and attitude of the players may not be the same, and if the loot council is either inexperienced (and thus makes mistakes) or biased, then you have gear being distributed unfairly and loot drama. Unfortunately this situation is far more common than the latter, so you end up with a lot of people who have been burned by loot councils before and who are going to be very wary of them.
Completely agree with this. Loot Council is often abused by greedy and or ignorant/inexperienced players who end up giving the system an overall bad reputation. Cause like you say, any decent raiding guild will know, that the best way to progress is to gear the class/player who will make the biggest difference number wise or the class that is required to kill a boss that you're really undergeared for.

On top of that it's always good to establish rules. We have a set of "rules" posted in our recruitment section and we require all applicants to read said rules. The rules includes detailed information on how loot is being distributed, how mounts are being distributed and how we generally do things. As part of the application template we ask, if people agree to these rules and they all say yes (don't think they all read the rules though), meaning that they can't complain later on.

But changing the way you handle loot cause you have a friend of a family member who really just want that BIS trinket or the GM/RL who just feel like he's more entitled to the weapon will shatter any Loot Council for obvious reasons.

All I can say, is that we've never had issues with it but we also don't abuse it and we're clear about how it's being handled. And ofc all our raiders have the same mentality progress>loot.

If the purpose of your group is for family and friends and "others" to get together, and progression is a secondary concern, then just pick a very simple loot system that doesn't give anyone any particular advantage. /roll MS > OS or whatever. People aren't going to be crazy about loot if, whenever they show up, they all have a fair shake at it. Anyone who IS crazy about loot, you can exclude from your runs or /gkick.

Loot councils are optimum for progression, but if you don't have a raid group that is sold on being "optimum" then you have no business having a group dole out loot in an "optimum" manner.
