    Camping: Campgrounds or Wilderness?

When/if you go camping this year, or you already have, which method do you prefer?

I love camping and I love being outside, but I absolutely do not enjoy campgrounds. Something about the commercialized, artificial "wilderness" experience campgrounds create doesn't appeal to me. They offer too much convenience and child-friendliness for an activity that should be natural and sacrificial of everyday amenities and technology. Its "camping" in the same sense that "hunting" is buying steaks at a supermarket.

Not to mention the lack of privacy, and the feeling of not being attached to nature makes me avoid campgrounds best I can, but regardless, I do what my friends want to do.

Camping in a proper campground is a joke, many even have showers FFS.

I won't camp in anything less than a 3 star hotel.

I went to one before when much younger.

They had fucking vendor machines selling snackfood, yay for the camping experience everyone!

It's not a real camping trip until you have to dig a hole and remember you forgot to bring toilet roll.

Suppose it might depend on the sort of campground. I can't speak much from experience since I've only been camping once, but it was in a campground on a barrier island (Assateague Island) with the tent pitched in sand in our designated spot behind the dunes and the wild ponies/small horses and a local type of small deer occasionally wandering nearby. Then there was the thunderstorm the first night... on a barrier island. Campground, but we were still roughing it a bit. lol

eh, I don't mind either one. when your'e on 1-2 week long camping trips having something other then a lake or stream to clean up in is nice. in my home town in Wyoming there's lakes where you can go camping and not have to deal with game and fish. I can take my dads boat to a spot thats as isolated as it gets, and for the weekend just get all kinds of fucked up.

Depends on the campground. The ones Ive been in you just pitch a tent, and they only have one restroom and maybe a pre built fire pit.

I wouldn't do pure wilderness due to bear / mountain lion concerns. I mean yeah those will still be a problem in campgrounds, but its a smaller issue due to it being more than just you in the area.

As long as you have to hike a little ways down a crunchy, windy road, and have to have a flashlight or lantern to make a midnight trip to the bathroom, it's rustic enough for me. RVs, streetlights, and paved roads are where I draw the line.

I don't understand the hate for campgrounds. Whenever I go to one, I barely even spend any time at it. I usually go and trek through the woods and see all the sights.

I prefer the ones that are a little bit of both. Defined camping sites in an area that is designed for human occupation without just randomly crap..I mean camping in the middle of the woods, but usually without wooden stakes outlining areas, bathrooms or cement parking spaces.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

Roughing it. Camp sites are really defeating the object of getting that escape from civilisation and going back to nature.

My campfire.gif is the closest thing I'll do to camping.

you'll be fine, you can get that on your phone
If you are particularly bold, you could use a Shiny Ditto. Do keep in mind though, this will infuriate your opponents due to Ditto's beauty. Please do not use Shiny Ditto. You have been warned.

A friend and I are going on a bike ride from Pocatello to lethbridge(?) Canada. I don't think there's a whole lot of actual camping sites along the way so we may be camping in the wilderness a lot. Should be fun but I'm okay with either or.

Closest thing to a campground I'm willing to use is a certain island in Minnesota. It
has a single toilet sitting over a pit; no building around it, no toilet paper, in the middle
of the woods. I love "roughing it" but damn it feels better to sit than to squat. ;P

My favorite camping is portage hiking trips through the Boundary Waters. It's only canoes,
electronics are banned, there's no (very) reliable maps, and the canoes have to be carried
a lot too. Oh, and brushing one's teeth with toothpaste is a bad idear up there.

TL; DR Roughing it, can't stand camp sites that aren't nearly barren.
