At first I was like "Just for one movie?"

Then I clicked on the thread and saw it's because he sold it. Can't really be too sympathetic now...and it doesn't even sound like he bothered to try to avoid this type of situation. He tried to profit off of another's work, kinda low.

The problem these media companies have is they look at everything as lost profit.

Say a pirated movie gets uploaded, and 100,000 people download it. If a ticket costs ten dollars, these companies think they lost a million dollars.

But, if every pirate site got shut down, I guarantee you those movies wouldn't see a million dollar increase, because those who pirated it wouldn't have gone to the theater anyways.

I typically buy many things that I pirate, not just movies. Movies specifically, if I didn't see it in theater and want to know if it's worth buying, I'll torrent it. If I like it, I buy it. If not, it gets deleted. Same with games.

Does everybody do it this way? No. But I'd imagine a lot of people do. This guy just made the mistake of selling what he pirated.

I'm glad the law is catching some of these people.

I can't speak for the rest of my pirate brethren, but i generally don't buy movies period...whether pirating is an option or not. I pirated pacific rim and watched it the other day. While I still occasionally go to the theatre to watch movies there was no way in hell I had enough interest in that shitty movie to go watch it. So I downloaded it. Now, if I couldn't find a good tor for that movie would I have gone out and bought or rented it? Not a chance in hell.

The difference being that just because you see something in the cinema doesn't mean you can watch it again whenever you want. Once you pirate a film, purchasing it later adds little value.

so much exactly. The fact that someone pirated something does not mean they would have been a customer if pirating was not an option.

More people should go to jail for non-violent crimes, especially white collar crimes where the amount stolen/embezzled, etc. runs into the millions or even billions.

He shouldn't have got almost 3 years for that.. but since he made a profit selling the pirated movie, I guess it's a theft. If on the other hand he would have went to jail for just pirating it, my next question would be "how the hell do they know what he downloaded?"

Sounds reasonable to me. Why people think they can just get away with this behavior is what I don't understand.

Ya you don't sell. That's asking for trouble.
The sentence is very long for a crime such as this, but regardless, it is extremely illegal so not surprising.

This might be comparable, if people left the cinema with a copy of the movie, or pirated movies disappeared after a single viewing.

A bit different. Seeing it at the cinemas you don't get to see it whenever.
Pirating it you can rewatch it whenever, same with a DVD.

Punishment should fit the crime though. It's still a relatively minor thing..

It's basically like chopping someones hand off for stealing bread.

Yea but he stole like 1500 bucks.. 3 years for that seems a little.. excessive. Especially if it was hes first time.
