    What?!

They are desperately trying to protect whatever little of modern civilization they have so far - China`s main enemy - internet neutrality, uncensored culture, civil rights and dismissal of ideology that belongs in the dustbin of 20th century, with the party that tries to justify the legitimacy it has lost long time ago.

The fool is trying to apply realities of 60 year old past, disregarding how much the West and Europe in particular has changed since its shameful imperial past and how little progress China has done in that domain. In fact, its mirroring tactics used by old imperial powers, with a lot more cunning and ruthlessness.

He usually sees history through a caleidoscope. It's just facettes of the same event existing synchronously which makes it easy for instance to mention the Livonian crusade and modern day events within one sentence while also arguing that both are in correlation with eachother right now. Him asking why Berlin did not protest in 1964 just is a good example for this. Apparently the freshly divided Berlin had a lot of diplomatic sway over Allied powers to make condemning statements expressing their outrage over the Hong Kong situation.

Some China expert on PBS News Hour said that if the protestors don't eventually back down, say in the next few days, there's going to be a huge crackdown by mainland forces.

The other thing is that the people in charge, Hong Kong and the mainland types aren't even attempting to talk to the protestors.

Some crackdown and human rights violations are imminent. Once brought to light, China will just scream "stay out of other nations affairs" while they hypocritically expand their spheres of influence in Africa and Latin Americia.

good luck to them, I doubt it will end quietly however. and I'm even more unsure about them getting what they want.

I honestly don't see why we shouldn't adopt a policy similar to Israel and the middle East when dealing with Asia. We seem to think that supporting a bigger asshole that agrees with us is sufficient for subduing assholes that don't.

Let the Japanese militarize and support their "right to defend themselves" The Chinese and Japanese have a bone to pick with one another 80 years in the making anyway.

Also been reading a lot about this and few analysts, while cautiously, they are basically saying that Hong Kong might be Crimea 2.0, tho it wont be in such blunt and stupid manner - lots of ''shadow play'' and backdoor deals.

You could make an argument that there are many who want the US to be more like china, mainly an oligarchy where a few dynasties lord over an endless sea of wage slaves.

There have been people already asking the police so far to stop using tear gas and when confronted by the police they have their hands up.

    Fixed that for you.

Situations like these are exactly why having and a Constitution / Bill of Rights like the United States is important and should be protected. Unfortunately even the U.S has been letting the Government slowly take these away rights / freedoms. For the most part it is still very strong though.

It is kind of amazing when you think about how concepts like freedom of speech, the right to peaceful protest, the right to bear arms (to protect against both outside enemies and the corrupt from the inside), the right to a fair trial and more were made pretty damn successfully over 230 years ago.
