Thread: New build time!

    New build time!

Usually build my own PC every few years but I've been out of the PC loop since I built my last one ~2 years ago so I'm here for some help/suggestions.

    •Budget $2000

•Resolution honestly no idea. I only run one 24 inch monitor

•Games / Settings Desired WoW, D3, SWToR, Sims4. Usually run them on the highest settings with shadows turned off or way down.

•Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc) Nope

    •Country US

•Parts that can be reused. None. Giving my current PC to a friend.

•Do you need an OS? Nope

    • Do you need peripherals (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc)? Nope

That's quite a bit under your budget...but as you only gaming, probably at 1080p (24" monitor), no video encoding etc...I think this will be more than enough to handle any game (max setting at 60fps), without wasting money unnecessarily. I even gone with better parts given your budget (i.e. H100i, Gigabyte Gaming 5, DDR3-2133 RAM, Corsair SSD) with red/black theme. Gone for GTX 970 vs. 980; 970 sweet spot for price to performance...980 alot more expensive. Not bothered with i7-4790k or 16GB RAM as you only gaming so not really needed.

Thanks for the build list It's close to what I came up with other than the mobo. I was pretty lost there lol
Nothing wrong with saving money either. Think I'll get a mechanical keyboard to go along with it and call it done.

Only thing id change from Candy's build is since you have a 2k budget, get a GTX 980. Then Id swap out the 256GB SSD for a 128GB model and throw Windows and it's apps on that. Then get a 480-500GB SSD for your games.

If you are going to overclock and have the time for it then obviously the i5 is the best choice. If you don't want to bother cause you don't have the time or for w/e other reason since you have the budget headroom you can't go wrong with the i7 either. With that in mind and that you can fit quality/featured parts... here we go :
(you can obviously make it cheaper...)

If you using a single monitor atm, i would suggest a good new one along with the above.

So after thinking about this for a few days I have to ask, how much of a gain can I realistically expect over my current set up? Assuming I'm using either of the sample builds from above.

    Currently using
    Proc-i7-3770k
    Mobo-Asus P8Z77-V
    16gb ram
    Samsung 840 256gb SSD/WD 1tb storage drive
    GTX 670 (I already have a 970 ordered)
    650w psu

Around 10% CPU increase and around 60% GPU increase. Honestly, I'd just replace the GPU with a 970 and call it a day for now for 1080p. Wait until Skylake for the CPU/DDR4/Mobo upgrade and it's still a decent enough rig.

Yeah, also overclock that i7 you got.

It's tough when your needs and wants battle each other

Anyway, thanks again for the help!
