Videogames are an outlet for my competitive, aggressive and sometimes confrontational nature as well as a means to explore and reconcile-with violent tendencies in an appropriate and safe environment.

I would hate to think how much worse off the world would be without gaming as a lightning rod for types of human nature and instinct which modern society has rendered obsolete and inappropriate.

No, here in Vegas, "Gaming" is synonymous with gambling. Its the legal term. If you want to work at a casino, you have to get a Gaming Card. If you deal with casinos in any capacity, you probably have to deal with the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

"Gaming" literally means the "Legal act of gambling" where just "Gambling" alone implies illegal, or uncontrolled. It also implies "Betting money on games" where "Games" implies puzzles with a logic component, a la 'game theory' and strategy.

part competition, part entertainment, part time killer.

Gaming is being able to sit for 4+ hours with intense concentration in order to achieve something you really want in a videogame.

    A way to waste time.

  6. #26
Two of your options are basically defining a hobby. Another form of entertainment and a time killer is basically what a hobby is to a lot of people.

  7. #27
To me, just another form of entertainment.

For me, the term gaming evokes tabletop gaming, either board games, wargames or role-playing games. Video games are something else, in my mind.

I take interest in a lot of things like movies, comics, astronomy, astrobiology, archaeology, UFO, alien, and conspiracy stuff, collecting figures and statues, your typical nerd stuff but it's nothing like my passion for video games. It's more than just a couple hours of entertainment for me. Unlike a lot of "gamers" these days (I seriously don't even know how some people these days can call themselves that) I actually care about the video game industry. I care about the direction it goes and it's "health". I also very much care for the art and story writing that is put into video games. So much so that from time to time I like to go into Wordpad and type up my own sort of story for a game whenever I get some ideas, I find it really fun. It has also made me decide what I really want to do with my life and that is to become a game designer (not sure when that will happen though seeing as how getting into a college isn't cheap and the fact that there is nothing for game designers around where I live so I will have to move to another state that does which again isn't cheap and I am not in a position to be doing that right now). This is also why I am able to forgive a lot of games that would otherwise get a lot of hate for like people bashing on a game because the graphics aren't super high definition 1080p on their 50 inch TV. That's not what video games are about. They're about having fun and experiencing the story, appreciating the art within the game if there is any (a good example of games who don't have much creativity are games like CoD and Battlefield, bland war shooters. They are like the Michael Bay movies of video games) not having the best graphics that you can get, that's just the icing on the cake. A game that comes out in the year 2100 can look like a N64 game or as old as a NES game and I can still enjoy it because I look past that and look at the gameplay. If it's fun the game is automatically considered a good game by me. After that I look at story, the characters, and everything else and that whats determines if it's just a good fun game or an all around great game. I don't even pay attention to graphics.

So as you can see video games is more than just a hobby, it's a huge part of my life.

    "Other" probably..

I tend to like games that allow me to create something, a city, a civilization.. etc. and very immersive games with lots of freedom, choices and interesting stories. So how should I put it, to experience alternate virtual worlds and change things there. I've never found them particularly entertaining though, a huge majority of games are simply terrible gameplay wise and I have to chew through them to experience the story.

Certain games for competition/sport, like CSGO and Starcraft 2. Other games, purely for entertainment, relief and fun

It's a hobby, it's entertainment. It's certainly not a sport, and anyone who thinks it is is an idiot.

Wow PVP was very much a sport to me, I was very highly ranked.

But gaming for me in general is really both entertainment/hobby.

There is a difference in being competitive and being a sport.

Poll is bad because of this reason. 99% of video game can't fall under the term sport by definition which is why they coined the term "e-sport". Competition is a much better word to describe video games then sport.

The only satisfying form of entertainment for people who can never switch off, or find that switching off makes entertainment painful.
