New in Washington D.C., any tips appreciated

Arrived here from Europe yesterday. I'm staying in Kalorama. Any tips on:

    - buying good groceries (particularly wholegrain bread and fruits)
    - buying hardware (power adapters)
    - getting around town as cheaply as possible
    - finding a good computer store where I can find IPS, 120/144 Hz and 4K monitors on display

    are helpful. Thanks.

When I was stationed in DC I walk, jogged, ran and took the underground metro ( http://www.wmata.com/rail/maps/print_map.cfm ).
For some of your other needs you may want to visit a Costco.

also I would say visit this place http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_...ashington,_D.C.
See if you can make a few friends with the Marines that guard the place, they are good people.

Some crazy guy fired seven shots from a rifle that hit the Whitehouse. The Secret Service just wrote the gunfire off to gang violence.

Sounds like I'm making that up doesn't it?

After three months of boring Switzerland, I think I could use a little crazy.

WholeFoods is good for breads and produce (although they are a bit expensive). There is one in the area http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com 2323 Wisconsin Ave NW Washington, DC

Harris Teeter is also mentioned as a good grocery store, less expensive than WholeFoods
1631 Kalorama Rd NW Washington, DC 20009 between N 17th St & N 16th St in Adams Morgan

Bestbuy is a good place to look at computer stuff, but ordering online is usually much cheaper, try out http://www.Newegg.com

As mentioned before, use the Metro to get around. Pretty much the only game in town unless you like taxis. Or get a bike

Also ask your neighbors good way to get to know some people before it gets really cold and people stay indoors more!

Found this online... it describes a co-op but also gives a lot of info about stuff in your area http://www.westmorelandcoop.com/neighborhood

Yelp.com is a great place to locate what you're looking for in the USA, and it has reviews

I'll parrot taking the metro. One of, if not the finest subway in the US.

Can't help you with the other stuff, but I will tell you this...If you like kebabs than go to the Kebab Palace. The only one I know of is over in Crystal City. It's like maybe 5 blocks away from the Metro station. Damn fine food. Damn fine. I'm sure there are more somewhere in the city but that's the only one I've been too. It's kind of pricey, but my god is it amazing.
Get a grip man! It's CHEESE!

Bestbuy is great for absolutely nothing. Find a Microcenter or and apple store, or a Microsoft store. Or go online.

No Applestore. Anything but an Applestore. Best Buy is better than an Applestore.

There is a microcenter in fairfax to the west of DC. Short trip. Best place for anything computer related

Bought my 144 Hz ASUS monitor there.

Sweet, never seen more than 60 Hz with my own eyes, and I'd never buy an expensive monitor without testing it first.

Thanks, that seems like a lot of good info.

Does anyone know what the sales tax for computer parts is in DC, Maryland and Virginia?

I would be inclined to find that plausible.; there is much more violence in S.E. Washington D.C. than the general public will ever be told.
