Which parts of my PC to upgrade?

ok! wow so much awesome info. I'm definitely looking at CPUs and MOBOs now. I think I have a good enough understanding of intel's stuff now. There's so many options. I'm going to try to find a i5 for a good price. I'm going to use your suggestions as a reference point.

What's the main stuff to look for in MOBOs? They should have a certain number of connectors? Otherwise I don't see the point in getting a fancy one.

When I'm ready for a GPU....ok so the GTX 760 2GB is a good reference ponit. I don't understand all of nvidia's options...what's one step up/one step down? Is it just GTX (higher number)? Should I aim for 2GB? I think the other options are 1GB or 4GB.

I'd be interested to hear how this turns out for you. I'm in a similar boat with essentially the same system (AMD Phenom II X6 1055T instead of the 1045). The one thing I read which I believe he'll still need is a new copy of the OS. The motherboard change will force him to reactivate Windows. My understanding is the OEM license is tied to the motherboard and thus he'd need a new copy to stay legal.

err should've been clearer but I was in a rush. it was the MOBO for $50. you had the z97 in your first suggestion and this one was an older one...z87. i'll keep looking out for things!
