How do you deal with loved ones who punish you with coldness and a steady drip of venom but never explain why?

(Assuming you don't want to discard loved ones from your life)

Honestly, its probably not worth the effort.

Depression? A girl? A cult? Could be a few reasons, does he use Facebook? Or whatever newfangled Canadian version of facebook.

He doesn't use facebook, and can't keep a girlfriend, and was involved in something called GIN (Global Information Network), which is a mixture of pyramid scheme and cult.

It's possible he never felt any great affection for you guys and was tired of making the effort familial relationships require.

On the contrary, he was always bullying us and rude to everyone in my family as if he did not value us at all. I'm not sure if we just didn't live up to his expectations or what, but he certainly didn't put much effort into having proper relationships with us.

Cult, it's always a cult in these type of situations. They want you to distance from your family, if your family is not a member of the cult. And if the family tries to dissuade them, they get the confirmation the cult teaches them about being shunned by their family, because they are not enlightened.

It's a known tactic used by many... "bigger" cults...

You mean my brother? Well, my family tried to reach out to him, love him, spend time with him... And he decided he didn't want anything to do with us 6 months ago and cut off all communication. So I don't really know what's up with that.
