New PC build €2k budget (including monitor) input needed!

    Hello all,

The time has come for me to finally build a PC. After doing some research I have come up with the parts stated below. I would like some input on these and see if I need to change anything, before I make my purchase in about 2 weeks.

    Main Parts:
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K
    MoBo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger
    GPU: ASUS STRIX GTX 980
Heatsink: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
    PSU: Cooler Master V-Series Semi-Modular 650W
Storage (SSD): Samsung EVO 840 250GB
Storage (HDD): Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Windowed Black Pearl

    Monitor:
    Monitor: Eizo Foris FG2421 Black

    Misc.:
Fans: Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition High Airflow 140mm
    Speakers: Logitech Z200 Black
    Controller: Xbox 360 Controller Wired.

    Price: ~€1867,-

I haven't included prices on the components since most have a variance of about €30 to €50.

    Budget: €2.000,-
    Resolution: 1080p at 120 Hz.
Games / Settings Desired: WoW, DotA 2, Witcher 3, Skyrim, also enjoy a bit of shooting every now and then. At Maximum settings.
Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc): Non at the moment. I do plan on capturing boss kills for my guild, but that shouldn't be worth the i7.
    Country: the Netherlands.
Parts that can be reused: I have 1.600mHz 8GB Low Profile Corair Vengeance 1,5V at the moment.
Do you need an OS?:Yes, I will purchase Windows 8.1, but this will be bought outside of this budget.
Do you need peripherals (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc)?:Yes, I would need both speakers and a monitor. Speakers don't have to be the end all be all (of course, better is good if it is within budget).

Should I get better RAM? I could sell my current (bought it new for €50,- less than a year back) and maybe get a 1866 version of it.

I will order wherever is cheapest according to nl<dot>hardware<dot>info & tweakers<dot>net.

Thank you for reading all of this.

    Cheers!

how the heck are you reaching 1860 pounds?

    https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/...750-gaming-pc/

Replace GPU to 980, CPU to 4690k, PSU to 650watt, + 250gb SSD and the price is only 1240 pounds(-80 if you remove windows 8).

    - Ram is fine, you should keep the one you got, as long as its 2 x 4gb sticks

    - I would go with western digital caviar blue instead of the seagate, more reliable.

    - Don't know if you have settled with the case, its a beautiful case no doupt. Alternatives at that price range are Phanteks Entho Pro (i like that the most in that ballpark) and Corsair 350D/450D.

    - Do you plan to overlock at a decent point, 4.4-4.5Ghz? If not then the i7 4790k you mentioned is better choice with the cheap and good CM hyper 212 evo cooler. You have the headroom on budget.

    - Psu instead of the CM, ones come to mind, i would pick a Seasonic/XFX 550-650W, Antec HGC620M, Corsair RM650.

    - SSD, MX100 256gb is usually a lot cheaper for same in real life performance.

    - Monitor is good no doupt. But at that price personally i would prefer to go for higher resolution than hz. I don't you can maintain 100hz+, you will have drops. So i would say 1440p@60Hz is a very attractive idea. Dell ultrasharp U2713HM or ASUS PB278Q are worth to look

    - A minor thing, i would prefer the Gigabyte G1 980 or MSI twin frozr over asus but that would be mostly a prefference i guess.

    It is Euros

Yes, I do plan to get a good overclock going if possible. So I guess I should stick with what I have. Or, would a H110, if I take the Enthoo Pro, be a better idea in terms of cooling? (And get some quiet fans to go along with it)

Psu instead of the CM, ones come to mind, i would pick a Seasonic/XFX 550-650W, Antec HGC620M, Corsair RM650
As far as I understood it, the CM is also a Seasonic. One reason I picked it is because of the silent operation at idle, or is that standard for present day PSUs? But I will look into your suggestions a bit more.

SSD, MX100 256gb is usually a lot cheaper for same in real life performance
I actually picked that one as a first pick, but saw that the EVO was once again getting some love in other threads. Will change that back.

Ye, I have been thinking about 1440p as well, but the reason I decided against it was that I am fairly close to the screen and I don't want to move my head to look in the corners. But isn't it also true that 120Hz monitors have benefits, without reaching the refresh limit? It would still move smoother, no?

Is there a particular reason to prefer those over the ASUS? I have no idea at all, I just picked the ASUS since it has silent operation at idle (I can see a trend here...)

Anyway, thanks a lot for the replies!

    - Point for the i7 was that, if you are going to spend over 100 euro for cooling you might as well get the i7 that is full-core turbo at 4.4 from the get go and is warranted with stock cooler. You could get a CM evo for 30euro and be done and you got an i7 instead of i5 in about same total ballpark (i5+100euro or more cooler = i7+evo)

    - i thought only V1000w was seasonic, 650 and the rest smaller ones were different. I remember someting about panasonic capacitors etc, could be wrong, memory playing tricks.

    - About the monitor if you play games that you can maintain high fps sure go ahead. But if you expect wow-type of games at 120hz you will be disapointed unless you don't care how much during raiding. It does improve with WoD but not huge differences.

    - Gpu as i said is a minor thing. Gigabyte G1 is the best overclocker, as in highest overclocking potential but if you don't care to overclock it more then... Msi is reported to be the second best and most silent one. Just pick what you like.

I think the gigabyte is one of the loudest. And the MSI had some issues with one of the fans not working or something like that.

I would probably pick the gigabyte myself, second would be the asus.

In terms of 120Hz for monitor, it applies to everything. It's generally more negligible for desktop application cause you're generally not like, speed reading a billion words per second and scrolling through millions of things at once. This will make things feel smoother and all that but it depends on how much you value that.

As for gaming, it really depends on the game. I don't have WoW off hand to really have any test, but for FFXIV 24 man clusterfucks, generally I can keep around 60-70FPS all high settings except for grass, and SSAO so 120Hz portion is pretty pointless. 4 man or 8 man tends to be higher where it can make a difference and it should be something like that in WoW probably where having higher refresh rate can be used.
Now, higher res potentially also means more object on screen where your CPU has more to do which can also lead to lower performance for CPU bottlenecked game. For non CPU bottleneck it just means your GPU is going to work harder like in both situations.
Both have it's own performance trade offs really and so it goes to, which do you care about more. Resolution or refresh rate.

I have the monitor and if you want to ask about it, go for it.

If you want to go for a 27" 2560x1440 I would suggest AOC q2770Pqu or you can wait and see how Dell U2515H will be like, it is 25" however for a 2560x1440.

The performance trade offs are exactly what bothered me (come on 120Hz 1440p IPS screens!), but the smoothness is what ultimately made me choose the Eizo screen. What made you choose the Eizo screen, and do you have any regrets?

Thus far, my parts will be

    CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K
    MoBo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger
    GPU: ASUS STRIX GTX 980
    Heatsink: Corsair H55
    PSU: XFX XTR 650W
    Storage (SSD): MX100 256GB
Storage (HDD): Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB
    Case: Phateks Enthoo Pro

I took the H55 heatsink purely for looks...

Also, I saw that ASUS is comming with the Z97-PRO Gamer MoBo. That thinks looks pretty sweet, is there any reason not to take it?

Thanks so far for the help!

144Hz 1440p IPS you'll have to wait for AUO's AHVA (competition towards IPS) offering. They're supposedly looking into it and starting to produce by the end of this year (maybe).
Another promising panel manufacturer is Sharp, who manufactured FG2421's panel, and the newer IGZO (they need a name for this, seriously) panel for PA322UHD-BK for NEC has a 120Hz at 1920x1080 aside from their 4k resolution offering.

And why I chose, well it's a high Hz, no PWM(hybrid really) non TN panel. 23.5" is perfect for me.
Don't have any regrets really. 240Hz I don't really use often because the function itself causes flicker due to how it works, like all motion blur reduction tech works really.

Hello all, time for some 1st page love..

I decided that I would stretch my budget to allow for 2 GPUs and use the Eizo Screen at the fullest of it's capabilities. Do I need to change my PSU to a 750W or is a 650W enough?

Also, I just bought windows 8.1 from the Microsoft website (student discount). But it gave me a .exe file to upgrade to my current installation. Does anyone know how to make it an .ISO to be put on a USB-flash drive so I can install it that way? And I needed to do something to enable UEFI or something before installing, right?

    Thanks.

A 650W is more then enough for SLI 970/980. I would advice to go for SLI 970 instead of 980 tho. I dont think the 300-400 dollars/euros extra isnt worth the performance increase, but that is up to you.

Look at what the PSU has in terms of cables if you're doing SLI. A lot of 650W PSUs don't have the needed PCI-E cables. They may be SLI ready but then you realize they only have 2x PCI-E connector and it's a bit awkward...
I'd look at something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151118
