Why is the south part of the city always shitty?

Everywhere i´ve been the south part of cities and towns seem to be the shittiest. Its like during the development of the infrastructure they went: ´That´ll be a good place for the poor people, drunks, criminals and immigrants´. For instance Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Rotterdam, etc.

Is there a reason for this?

I would say coincidence. In my town it's NE and West that are the troublemakers, the southern parts are the most posh.

In the city i live in, it's the west part that has all the trouble. South is generally considered the nicest part

It's got to be a coincidence but I have lived in two cities and both of those, the south side was the bad part of town. And had the best food, imo.

I would say coincidence, I currently live in Leeds and the south is not so great, albeit east Leeds is nothing to write home about either. The wealthy parts are the north and the north/west generally.

Well Detroit doesn't have a south part only east and west and you all know the misconception about how horrible and 3rd world Detroit is but it isn't, Detroit is on the rise folks we coming back baby!!!!

When I was in Halifax, the shitty parts were North and Western parts of the city. South was downtown where all the fancy buildings and big businesses were.

Where I am now though, Yarmouth, the South is regarded as the bad part of town and rightfully so.

The south is definitely the richest part of the city here. While the north/east might have the "scene" we have the villas.
