    /r/nofap

So I had a gander at this subreddit recently called /r/nofap ( http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/ ) and had a gander at it for a couple of weeks before I came to my conclusion that it's, very ironically, possibly the biggest circlejerk about not jerking I came across. I'm seriously trying to find credible evidence against masturbation and I even watched a TEDtalk or two like this one,

But it still seems sketchy. So what was the next step?

Not jack off for an entire month, that's what. See if there's anything I can experience for myself, albeit if it's just going on my feels alone.

It didn't feel that great. I didn't levitate things with my dick and I was a really moody bitch by the end of it. I even bashed my former classmates who were making religious posts and threw my fedora at them at one point on Facebook which is something I never did before.

I'll concede one thing, however, is that if you wait for a long time it does feel better when you actually do fap. But those folks claim more. A lot more.

So anyone have a theory or anything on not fapping? I seriously want to get my head around this.

The people I've seen at nofap sound legitimately insane, they are almost cultish the way they act. They make plenty of claims, including some nonsense about porn making you a misogynist or some crap, I give it the same credibility I do people claiming video games make you a mass murderer. Then again, maybe I'm different from most people since a lot of the popular porn seems to be about ramming it home as hard as possible while calling the chick a whore, not really my speed. As for not masturbating itself, I'm pretty sure there's little evidence to back any of their claims (makes you anti-social, etc). They have a point for people who do it far too much but we already knew that was a problem, we didn't need them to tell us. If you're addicted to masturbation then maybe working on cutting back a bit. If not, nothing to worry about.

    You guys are gentler.

You use the cat of nine tails instead of the cheese grater.

So there is porn addiction? Where do you draw the line at that?

Like I stopped for a whole month for science but I look at it constantly, being a lonely 19 year old and all.

Generally the line gets drawn when it starts interfering with your life. Are you avoiding things you need to be doing or ignoring responsibilities to watch it? Are you watching it in places where it's not appropriate? Are you engaging in risky behaviors in order to get a 'fix'? Porn addiction is definitely a real thing but it's an addiction just as any other addiction, it's harmful insomuch as it affects your ability to function and live a healthy and happy life.

Edit: Should have mentioned, if you find these things are true of you then I wouldn't take nofap's route. There's a lot of self-hatred there, a lot of shame. It's not something to be ashamed of, it can happen to anyone. The key is acceptance and working on bettering yourself to get healthy again. I would recommend therapy as well as it can help you work out any issues that might be causing you to latch onto porn. Addictions occur because we are looking to fill a space. Identifying what it is and working towards that will help more than just abstaining.

I honestly don't think it's a problem. It's not really interfering with a whole lot because I just don't have simply a whole lot to do - I'm generally a pretty straight edge guy because I absolutely hate fun things like drinking, smoking, liver cancer, and lung cancer.

So when I hear about something I'm doing could potentially damage me in the long run I get a bit curious because if for some reason porn did really made me blind then I obviously should cut that out.

So I was just curious if this was just total bunk because that subreddit is a serious circlejerk.

Don't think it's actually useful at all. Why not do it if you want to?

Is it some form of self restraint training? Because that I can understand, but outside of that I can't recall anything healthy gained from not masturbation.

Can't really understand the logic behind not masturbating, like, if it's to try and teach self-restraint there's hundreds of other ways to do so without depriving yourself of said act.

But it's their life to live and a prerogative they pursue.

This is really not an appropriate topic for this forum. Closing.
