Talking Comp has been slow lately :(

For what ever reason these past few weeks my computer has been running abnormal slow. Its slow after restart, as well some programs wont respond. I'm not sure whats going on, I have run my anti virus several times (McAfee). Is there a way I can speed up my computer a little bit? Or is there a way I can clean it up. I just use it for gaming and browsing the internet.

Please lend a gamer a hand

    Too much porn.

In all seriousness though, I have a habit of completely wiping my machine if something goes wrong, as I don't keep important data on it, I just go ahead and reinstall windows.

Hardware wise though, clean out your case, reseat your CPU with new paste if things are getting hot.

It runs cool, I got liquid cooling and what not. I keep the inside dust free. It ran amazingly fast the first year I had it.

First thing I'd do is remove that. My experience (14+ years computer repair technician) is that McAfee and Norton cause more problems than they fix. I just had to reformat someone's computer just yesterday because Mcafee had borked it up so much it wasn't fixable in a decent amount of time.

That said... Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, HijackThis, will probably get you on your way.

    Yeah remove McAfee for sure.

Go with Avira - its lightweight and free, and does a great job as an anti-virus program.

Also, maybe you haven't defragged your HD in awhile.

and what Chazus said, get CC Cleaner (Free) and run it now and then. I run mine once a month and it takes less than a minute to clear cookies and junk.

If you don't want to do a new install of windows you can do this.

    1) start/run-msconfig-------turn off start up programs/ turn off services you don't need(check hide microsoft services- then disable all) restart
    2) revo unistaller---unistall programs you don't need----find adware/malware programs.
    3) Ccleaner---- clean your system of junkfiles and junk registry items.
    4) malwarebytes---
    5) virus scan
    6) rootkit scan---NPE norton power eraser is one.
    7) auslogics---- defrag program.

even after doing this reinstall of windows still speeds things up....just how windows works...

you can also invest in a SSD drive...the 256GB ones are starting to get under 100 bucks.

Press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to open the task manager and check which applications and processes are using all the memory and CPU time.

Surprised no one suggested this, it's the first thing to do.

So far I ran CC cleaner and cleared up 3,000 mb worth of garbage. Got rid of a few things with Revo. Working on the other suggestions still. Hope it picks up.

i should mention..... check your hard drive for good condition. Crystaldiskinfo---- if it is a green good then its good if it is a yellow caution it usually means your hard drive is going out and needs to be replaced.

^^^ This. If you don't find issues there, then continue one with the next suggestions.

Another to add to the list: Uninstall any programs you no longer use.

If theres no specific app creating the issue then it sounds like Windows rot, only real solution is to fresh install Windows. Windows has always got slower over long term use, i dont install many apps yet im feeling my Win 8.1 getting slower by the day. Its been 8 months since i went to Win 8 and it seems a little better at resisting rot, 8 months instead of usual 6 months with Win 7 or earlier.
