In relative terms the US was less unbeatable. It had a nuclear monopoly, but nuclear delivery systems were primitive at best. No submarines, no ICBMs, no stealth bombers. In fact, the 1950s doctrine to deliver a nuclear weapon was to fly several hundred B-52s, only one of which carried a nuclear warhead, in an effort to prevent the one important plane from being shot down. Meanwhile, the Red Army was stationed a stone's throw from the East/West German border, and several tens of thousands of T-54 battle tanks to back up the Red Army.
