In relative terms the US was less unbeatable. It had a nuclear monopoly, but nuclear delivery systems were primitive at best. No submarines, no ICBMs, no stealth bombers. In fact, the 1950s doctrine to deliver a nuclear weapon was to fly several hundred B-52s, only one of which carried a nuclear warhead, in an effort to prevent the one important plane from being shot down. Meanwhile, the Red Army was stationed a stone's throw from the East/West German border, and several tens of thousands of T-54 battle tanks to back up the Red Army.

What could they do with those tanks? Spread them over western europe?

I'm actually pretty sure that China does not want this to happen for this exact reason.

China is the only country that could handle this population. They're the only one who have a few ties to the country and who might have a little trust from the population (especially if the US or any other country attacks them). And if this ever happens, the whole world will have their eyes stuck on how they handle this.

And there's no way China would want to handle this mess on top of its current issues.
